I have a 2Kw hot air gun that I use for softening hoses before fitting which does the job a treat but needs shore power to use. I would like something that I can use without shore power and I have come across a 300w version:

Two questions: Will this have enough oomph to soften hoses and will it run off my 350w Sterling inverter?

All advice gratefully received. Thanks.

300W sounds fairly puny for a useful heat gun.
I think I'd rely on a saucepan of water on the cooker, and hot, wet cloths. Or perhaps (carefully) hold the hose above the gas ring

I once tried using SWMBOs hairdrier for the purpose: the heat wasn't enough for the job. Why tell the story? It was a 1200 watt affair compared to the 300 watt you're looking at, so I suspect that there's no way it'll do the job. I use a jug full of boiling water to do the job.

I expect that the 300W heat gun will produce much hotter air than a hairdrier ... just not very much of it. If it's for heating pipes to fit, what about dunking the ends in boiling water instead.

OK, thanks for the input chaps. The consensus seems to be that the 300w heat gun won't be up to the job.

My Plan B is to devise some sort of arrangement to connect a length of heater hose to the kettle so that I can direct a jet of steam at the hose. Any thoughts on this idea?

you will need to isolate the sensor in the kettle, otherwise it will keep switching off. Usually there a small hole which can be blocked by Bluetack - BUT this will allow the kettle to run dry - You have been warned :)

If he could use an electric kettle, I think he would use the 2kw device instead.
