Have no idea why abbreviated though understand that IANA is a correct alternative version and there are a few more larger ships/boats also named the same way. Wikipedia??

My Moody 38cc is called Yak :)

Comes into the 'Not many people know this' category, because not many speak Tibetan.

A yak is the male* of the species. A lady yak is a nak. Boats are generally considered female gender. Thus, your boat should be called 'Nak'.

*that's why I've always resisted the temptation to drink yak's milk.

A famous Admiral's Cupper was called 'Imp'.
That was the name of my first boat, but mine was a 12 foot sailing dinghy.

Just read an article about the restoration of a boat called 'Vim'. It's American, so maybe it doesn't have the same association with a domestic cleaning powder.
I'm guessing you didn't do Latin at school. :)

Back to the OP, I see no reason why a short name would be problematical, unless you mean a TLA.

I have always thought that JO would be a good name for a boat.

It is a Scottish work for sweetheart and means "I am afloat" in the International Code of Signals.

Although, if taken in isolation, the two letters could mean "I am leaking dangerous cargo and have a man overboard".....'

>Only thing you're not allowed is things like pan pan or over.

There was an English guy in Venezuela who bought a boat and called it Security. We politely suggested that he change it because it sounds like Securite. He refused, but always used 'sailing yacht Security'.

The one next to us has rags sticks and string on it so I am guessing that there could be two of you :)

The first time we called into Dartmouth after buying Eos we could not believe that the first boat we saw sailing out of the river was also called Eos! Berthed about 200m from us.
