Had funny steering problems yesterday and investigation showed starb'd leg not being 'steered' even tho tiller arm and spindle turning as should. Came back downriver today on port engine only and back at marina engineer guy said bolt at rear of steering cowling gone AWOL. Have to wait for lift later this week to find out full story but has anyone else experienced this?

If engineer man is to be believed this is a tapered bolt which secures the after end of the steering cowling to the upper gear housing and which transfers the turning force to the leg itself, Sound rational? Keyparts quote £36.
Wot chance other consequential damage may have been caused?

Tapered stainless bolt my armpit! Go to Jones Industrial fastners in surbiton. A new stainless 316 allen bolt will cost you about a quid. Take one from the other drive or the remaining one left in the offending drive to match with. Altho its a european make, the bolts are actually unf threaded to satisfy the yanks for some reason.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Yep Tony, thats the one I'm thinking of too. Phew, the price has gone up somewhat since I had to buy new ones for my legs. You won't know for sure until you have her lifted for a proper look. For now, If you can get into the water, sit astride the leg and have someone turn the wheel very slowly, you can feel the steering helmet with your fingers, this will stay still, if it is these bolts that have come out you will feel the steering yolk moving just above the helmet. The new bolts will come with a locking nut, put some Loctite on it. There should'nt be any damage, probably just some scratched paint on the helmet with a bit of luck.
Keep me posted will you?

Just got back from the marina. Boat lifted this morning and sure enough found main connecting bolt from steering cowl to leg upper housing had gone completely AWOL. This is quite a substantial bolt - purpose designed for the job- and it would appear it had simply vibrated loose and eventually dropped out !
Anyway, new one all fitted, checked other leg and found that bolt not particularly tight so re loctite'd that one too. New starb'd prop fitted as well - so now matched pair 15 x 15's and she goes back in this afternoon. Hopefully play hookey and day out tomorrow cos forecast looks good. How much....? Havent asked and dont want to know until I have to !
