2019 Mobo Forum Summer Solent Meet

Traditionally we have ridden on Saturday, returning to home port Sunday. We are also planning an extended stay in E Cowes, and riding Saturday probably works best? I will contact the Ride Leader and test the water.

No worries. I don't think we've done a bank holiday weekend before have we? Always been a Saturday ride then depart for home Sunday.

I presume G is organising the ride? The Randonnee course was a good one. Found some quieter roads than our last venture and went clockwise rather than anti clockwise.

Henry :)

Any thoughts on timings for Saturday ride? I need to sort dogs and get the ferry over to join you from cowes? unfortunately zippy is ashore not and most likely not relaunched in time so I’m just coming over for the day, ride and catch up after before heading back on the ferry Saturday afternoon.

Something like an 09.30 start from E Cowes Howard.

That works for me. .8.00 ferry gets in at 9. Shoot over to ecm and sneeky espresso before the off..

If this doesnt work for others tho I can change!!

Thanks for that Roy. If we use the Randonnee route From a couple of weeks ago we miss out much of the main road. Not all but a good portion. We could also take the bike gravel track from Yarmouth up to Freshwater along the old railway possibly?

9.30am sounds a respectable start time. Early enough to impress the non cyclists but not too early to preclude a pre ride coffee. You're more than welcome to come aboard Emily Jo for a cheeky one Howard.

Henry :)

On the Randonee there was 2 routes in Freshwater, the old railway line as you say and a road route for those who didn't want their road bike on the gravel.

Do all remember that this is not just a cycling event - anyone who is boating in the Solent (or further afield for that matter) is welcome to join us.

Just to clarify -

Meeting at East Cowes Marina. We are having a dinner on Saturday the 25th.

Regrettably I have to leave on the Sunday due to other commitments.

I will be about on the Saturday, to offer any mechanical support if anyone needs it.
Gary, Henry and Howard all have my mobi number.
Also looking to join you for grub in the evening.

How gravelly is the gravel track H? Not sure my bike would benefit from a shot peening. Don’t think this work hardens carbon fibre?

Thanks for the offer of coffee Henry, look forward to that, just working on logistics now but 9.30 start would be great if everyone is happy. Would you mind if I left a small bag on board Emily Jo whilst we cycle? Lycra is fine for cycling but not my preferred in social situations!

Paul, the gravel track is not too bad, I have walked it a few times and it’s pretty solid but personally I would prefer the road which has one little hill and a long downhill into Yarmouth.

Thanks to Roy for mechanical support, hopefully we won’t need you other than to join us for lunch somewhere?

The hill out of Yarmouth is an evil nasty 20% climb with a wall straight on to the road and cars driving past. That said I have managed it a couple of times now and only died a little bit. I'm assuming we're going anti clockwise to take advantage of the wind down south.

The Randonnee route goes inland a bit off the military road taking in some pretty sights, I seem to remember a water mill. It's the official cycling route, no cars and lovely tarmac.

The Yarmouth cycle path isn't tarmac but we've ridden it a few times on the fold ups without issue.

No problem at all leaving stuff on the boat.

Probably worth reiterating :D

We'll be over Friday night in our usual spot.

Absolutely. We will be there Saturday, Sunday and probably Monday until after lunch.

Maybe we can arrange something on the fly for Sunday night depending on the mood.

Henry :)

Looking forward to the weekend. I've just sorted the provisional cycle route out for Saturday and it looks like we will be stopping off for a bite to eat around 1.00pm (give or take) at the Wight mouse, Chale, Roy's suggestion. If anyone fancies making a trip out there - I know there are a couple of motor bicycle riders in our number then feel free. It won't be a pretty sight, sweat, lycra and fat never is but don't worry, we'll change for dinner in the Lifeboat later on.

To those staying in East Cowes for the day could I suggest a brief walk down to East Cowes town center and Prego for lunch. A modest little cafe where we had wonderful service and a cracking chicken pasta a couple of weeks ago. There's a Waitrose there as well if you need to top up on supplies. Gary will probably need to top up his massage butter supplies.....

Henry :)
