2016 Scuttlebutt Cherbourg Cruise

We had a go at getting over, left Yarmouth at 06:00, The Needles was horrible, I swear we had the Bavaria airborne at one point. We put up with the lumpy conditions for about an hour after the Needles but decided that 10+ hours of that, with no autohelm and just the two of us was not sensible so carried on round the island to get back home. Even that was uncomfortable until Bembridge.

We're sorry to miss it, but I'll keep the two kegs of Pilsner handy for next year :)

Made it after an eventful trip and took the soft option of P61.

Probably won't make wine tasting as have some emergency repairs to make: auto helm jamming even when off and furling drum problems that mean we had to drop the Genoa about 20 miles out- thanks to Horation Nelson for offering to stand by.

We did see a pod of dolphins which brightened the journey.

Can't say I blame those who took the Yarmouth option.

Simon, we are next to you on the hammerhead. Thought I recognised the name but, by the time it clicked you were all tucked up. Will catch up in the morning - don't worry about the wine tasting - there are a few not going.
Pete

I'm going to give myself a bigger bigger weather window next year, at least Thursday till Monday.
We planned Thursday to Monday but switched at the last minute to Wednesday to Sunday. If we hadn't left Wednesday lunchtime we wouldn't be here!

If the weather looks like it'll settle down again, does anyone fancy another try before September goes?

Yes, why not. The boat is ready - just need to screw on the plastic backing pieces with the SSR numbers. I couldn't sum up any enthusiasm for the task after I cried off on Thursday morning :sorrow:

Okay, next week's a Spring tide which will give me an opportunity to dry out and examine my sterngear as I'm pretty convinced something's not right. So how about the weekend of the 24th?I suspect uptake will be fairly low so I won't book any meals or berths.

Was it something I said? Woke up this morning and the only boat left in Cherbourg was Lady in Red. Even Nigel wasn't returning my calls. Left in a huff. Actually closer to a minute and a huff.

Great seeing everyone who made it and Kudos squared to Roger, who organised it all and still managed to get there and chair the proceedings, despite his little adventure.

Had one of my own on the way back, but will draw a discrete veil over it. Only vast quantities of gin & tonic will wrest it from my failing memory. You have been warned!

What went wrong, did you run out of fuel?

My post above #267 gives complete explanation.

in future in addition to checking fuel gauge I will be listing dates of fill up and quantity. Fuel gauge never been wrong/stuck before!

Both Jane and I had a great time on Marks boat and dinner was good but copious amounts of wine resulted in jane going to bed early leaving me and one other to prop up the bar till the very end and no doubt I was talking more rubbish than normal!

Now in Hendaye on French/Spanish border having driven the length of France from Cherbourg (approx. 600mls) . Been 32 deg C here!! Driving on to Nazare , Portugal tomorrow.

Put dates in your diaries for next year, September 2nd is the best for a neap tide, with September 16th also heaps but with a higher range. Over to you, Roger!

As previous years a great weekend marred only by the weather that prevented some folk not making it to Cherbourg (there were times during our crossing on Thursday evening that I wished that I was with them!!!!! :o:o). Very many thanks to Mark & Andrea for the wonderful hospitality on board Irelands Eye over the whole trip :encouragement:.

Also many thanks to Roger for the (as usual) excellent organisation and providing the best reason for not crossing! The RNLI rule - OK!

Contrary to other opinions voiced here we found the UK Border Force visitors to be the height of civility and good humour whilst south of the IOW!!
