Years ago on the Scuttlebutt cruises many will remember Tome. In those days ch69 was always used, Tom's idea, "Ch69, going down". New members of the forum may not have heard of Tome, he was a bright light but lost his life to cancer in Nov 2007, a generous and much loved poster.

Have a great trip, weather looks to be quite benign this weekend. I'll try and cadge a lift one year.

Hopefully we will be able to get away early on Thursday morning. Looks like a bit more west in the wind then. Planning to go direct to Cherbourg via Bembridge Ledge, I don't think we will make the gate at St. Vaast. And there's not much point in slogging west to look for a better angle to cross on Friday - we could end up beating both days.

1. Passport - never been asked for mine

2. ORIGINAL ships registration papers (either Part1 registration or SSR) - this is to prove that you have the right to fly the british flag and subject to british rules. I have met a boat that was fined in Paimpol for no orginal ships papers even though he had the VAT invoice. As mine was a charter boat I am aware that they accept photocopies out of courtesy for charter boats.

4. labels if possible to wear at afternoon pontoon party. Nibbles contributions welcome.

Are you going direct from Wicor? We are also planning to go over on Thursday (lunch in Café de Paris on Friday!)

I was thinking of setting off from the Western Solent but with the early wind in the west now on Thursday I might now go to Gosport marina Wed evening for provision & Fuel and set of from there around 06.00.

If you are leaving around the same time might be nice to keep in touch, my first crossing in 10 years and in the new boat.

Booked up for a birthday party tomorrow evening so we are planning to sleep on board on the mooring and try to leave at 05:00 on Thursday to catch the last couple of hours of west-going tide down the back of the island. Looks like we could be crossing together.

What about Genoa cars, though? I never seem to get those right.

Looking at Passageweather.com COAMPS is showing a lot lighter but more southerly than GFS and It tends to be a bit more accurate, in my experience. I prefer to wait for WRF, the most accurate of the 3, before making final plans as it has more manual intervention.

The theory is, that the line of the sheet should bisect the angle at the clew, giving an even pull to leach and foot.
In light airs move them forward, this tightens the leach, and leaves the sail a bit fuller, and more powerful. This is Adam Bowers fourth corner theory.
In stronger winds moving them back will allow twist at the top, but flatten the bottom of the sail and help de-power it.
Well that's how it works on my boat, but the position comes with trial and error.

Thanks Keith, I hadn't considered it was wind speed rather than direction and it wasn't clear in the stuff I'd read.

We never did get that winter sail, work got in the way.

You must have missed post #179.
We are heading off at about 06.30 on Thursday from Portland. I will now head straight for Cherbourg.
With the weather being so changeable I don't want to get bogged down anywhere else and miss the evening do.
I will look out for you arriving late Friday afternoon.
