I have a pair of 2003 Evinrude 250 HP outboards. The only issue I have with them is that they destroy spark plugs. Earlier this year, I had trouble cranking them and found that the cranking problem was related to the spark plug gap being to wide. I just assumed that who ever put the last set of plugs had not gapped them correctly. After I had gapped them correctly, no problems. Recently, I had trouble starting the engines again. Upon inspection of the plugs I found that the center electrode was eroded to the insulator. I probably have not put 50 hours on the engines since I last gapped the plugs. I am using the best plugs that Champion makes.
I called Evinrude and their first response was that you need to gap your plugs more frequently. After talking with them awhile, they owned up that it was a problem.
Has anyone else had this problem???
