They are used to control the direction you want the boat to go in when its not tied to a dock.
It's like dual controls in a driving school car.
Because there simply isn't enough room for three.![]()
I once had a Westerly Konsort Duo with wheel and tiller steering.
You could switch to tiller by means of a lever at the tiller station.
One day I had my mate steering from the wheel inside. Out of his sight I switched to tiller. I gently steered to port, he compensated by turning to starboard. I moved her even more to port, I then flung the helm hard to starboard, he frantically swung the wheel the other way..........
This went on for about ten minutes, zig zagging all over Conway Bay before I finally collapsed in laughter.
