So Saturday dawned.
Goodie Goodie, 2 days on the Straits doing powerboat stuff.
3 peeps wanted PB2.
Basically they wanted an ICC each.
For to hire stuff in Spain or France or somewhere.
Main geezer, 71 going on 50 fair play to Him.
Owner of a Botnia Targa 33.
Been boating for 45 years and His Shipmates nearly as long.
No "Official" bits of paper between them but lots and lots of Sea Miles buggering about the Irish Sea.
Main Geezer had previously been involved in the Marine Trade too , big style.

Oops, thought Kwaka , got to be on the Ball this time, these chaps might show Me a thing or two.
So We did the Teachy thing.
So then they wanted a bit more teachy stuff on the Botnia Targa 33.
"Yes Please" says I!
Flip, yer don,t refuse a go on one of those machines.

Where said ship is berthed, tiss pretty tight.
"How der normally get out of here Guys" I asked.
"Well Fred (all names are ficticious, cept mine, to protect the peeps and to give no clue to their Briefs etc etc) well I stand forward and push the Bow out Cliff stands by the Stern with a Big Fender thinghy and Steve works the Twin Engines, steering wheel and the Bow Thruster!!!!
Cripes, Blimey, Guys weve just done a Course on Boaty stuff!
Have I failed to Teach?
"Yer but that was on one eng"
"Yer" says I but the Princuples are the same!
Wind, Tide, into gear, out of gear, wheel here then there etc etc.

So anyway a bit if a Demo with the Botnia , parking manouvering, mucking about with twins, legs, bowthrusters de blah de blah and I think they got the message.
And they parked it good.

So now they taught Me.
Was not as rough Today as Yesterday where We were playing, shame Saturday was really Humpty.
However wind against in the Menai Straits can always dish up some Lumpy Bits
So of We go at High Speed.
Fair play to the Guys, they knew how to handle Her in the Lumpy Stuff (or maybe it was My excellent tuition on the R.I.B on Sat) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif but then again the Hull does most of the work.
So we,ve got outdrives to trim and Trim Tabs, lots of horsepower and a Cracking Hull.
Man! what a Hull.
5 ft chop and 36 kts and nowt on the Windscreen and Autopilot working like a Tramline and 6 kts punching against Us.
I would like One.
4 Berth, Built like a Brick Sh%t House.
No Gin Palace.
But what a Sea Boat.
I envy Botnia owners.

Here is a point though.
Said Owner wanted to do The Course on Hs boat, not the Schools R.I.B.
We did it on the R.I.B anyway.
So when We boarded His Botnia.

The anchor was missing.
"Oh yeh We lost that a couple of weeks ago."
The VHF was US.
" Oh Yeh We have a backup Handheld but it's flat and at Home"
"Spare anchor and Kedge" I enquired.
"Yeh at Home too!"
Chance too good to miss, so We still went out!
Oops! have I broken all the RYA rules?
Boll%cks , I don't care, what a boat.
Yep, I want One!

Lack of anchors would stress me more than lack of VHF for where you were. Could always chuck an engine over if it failed tho' I guess.

I wll have to get you trained to post photos. Go to Photobucket & set up an account (it's free - or I wouldn't have one). Create an album & load a selection of your best photos into it. Then copy the Url address for a pic. open a post & click on the image icon & paste in the photobicket Url for said piccy & Bob's you proverbial. Off you pop now & surprise us all! Steve K

Good read K, Cheers.

It's about time I gave you a tip back. Here goes. When me and the missus are coming for our PB Level 2 stock up on headache tablets mate.

Is that the same BT 33 that is in Port Dinorwic, the one I moored next to? BT's are on my list of must-haves if I get get the cash together!

Anyway you lucky booger, Sat was crap in Porthmadog. Spent Friday in Pwllheli sorting stuff out on CI. Sat it howled it down esp at night. Sun was nice but had to drive home /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yep, that's the Beauty!
All Singing and Dancing.
Weird at first, no feel at the wheel and no "Stop", ie the wheel goes round and round and round and round!
Fly be wire and all that.
Could do with a "rudder" indicator, to help the Owner whilst doin close quarter stuff.
Well, the wheel is best left alone for those tricks.
Think yesterday's demo gave Him food for thought however.

It's a great boat.
You'd be Boss of Portmadoc in one of those.
Yeh, one would suit PM.
Twin legs, yer could lift em up around those pesky sandbanks there.
Plus they do seem to take a fair bit of Sea.
Again that'd be dead handy for You, what with Your Dodgy weather forecasts /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

A serious proper boat. Ideal for the Irish Sea. I was well impressed.
Tried it at speed in Semi D mode and displacemnt in quite a chop.
Didn't matter what speed it liked all modes.
Such a solid feel and very confidence buiding.
Heard and read all about them.
The reality was even better than expected.
Yep You would love one, got to be as good a Sea boat as Coney Island (Dave's Windy ,folks) and a Doddle to handle after 15 mins practice.
First time for Me in a twin engined vessel, cept for the little go I had in your's Dave, flippen spoilt now!

Such a solid feel about the whole boat.
Saturday was quite choppy even in the Straits, which was quite nice for the Guys driving the 6m Humber (same one we had a blast through the Swellies in) gave them something to think about!
Sunday not quite as bad but enough to check out the Botnia's paces.
An hour or so passed so quickly I could have played for Hours and Hours.
Great Fun, Great Boat.

You're going to do PB2 with Kwacker?

Are you mad or just a thrill seeker?

Make sure your depth sounder is accurate. He dosen't like to boat in water more than waist high.

Feels a bit out of his depth, bless him /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Tip: he's partial; to a cuppa and sarnies but watch him or he'll have the lot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Noted

Take5 don't listen to SV.
I made a kind offer to take His 50 footer through the Swellies at low water, earlier this Year.
Me and MajorCatastrophe made Plans.
But SV shot off , flat out, back to Malahide!!!
Dunno why? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Some Forumite,s been telling Porkies about Me leveling the Tips off most of the sticky out bits in the Straits.

See even Little Ship came through with Me.
We had as much as 4ft under us at one point. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I,m glad We all had lifejackets and had Notified Holyhead Coastgaurd.
Well yer can,t be too cautious when going Deap Sea.
Good boat to That Little Ship, as well as Sarnies and Char it used to have Red Wine aboard.
It's only got Cranberry Juice now. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
So fear Not Takey.
It's safe with Me, don't listen to Em.
Anyway if owt does go wrong, You'l both be able to paddle ashore in yer bare tootsies. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your doing bugger all for my nerves mon. Cept maybe sending them over the edge.

I swear everytime I sit down at my PC I have to take a look at them Swellies on a chart. I have been and bought myself a chartplotter and the first thing I checked is if there is a minimum depth alarm feature.

SERIOUS QUESTION: Am I ever going to be able to launch my boat and turn to right or am I doomed to a life of going left only from the launch ?

If you sus out how to use the chart plotter, can you let me in on the secret? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Swellies are no sweat - provided you stick to passages at 2hrs before HW Liverpool. Even us sailly boats go thro' then.

But it can get a bit exciting if you are not good at timekeeping:
DSCF6360-1.jpg

Takey , Snedd.
Chuck them Chart Plotter thinghies over the side.
Develish electronic gadgetry!

Scaremongering leccy bleedin bits of kit. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
In fact don,t even believe the Paper charts.
The Admilratly, Plus other Peeps who update Charts etc etc.

They are History.
They can't keep up with My Regular re arrangement of the Charted Depth at L.A.T.
I have it all on the back of a Fag Packet.

"Notice To Mariners"
Kwacks fag packet is available on line at straittrade@googlemail.com
Updated weekly or every time a new PB2 Victim clouts another sticky out bit.
No charge.
Just bung some Bucks into the RNLI coffers.
I use their services regularly /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

lol, is that in reference to yesterdays position question? I already have our CV`s into the RNLI.

Searush, is that photo of the Swellies? If so do you have any more on an online album or anything I could look at. I really like the quality of that image mate.

K. Im putting your posts on ignore before I have done me PB2 with ya mate. Me nerves are shot at.

Flip Rushey,
That was a brave photo if yer took it from Your Yoghert.
Presume you were heading to Menai Bridge then?

Glad you posted that piccie actually.
Cos the fallen petrfied tree, I was using as a Transit to go round the "Wrong Side" looks like it's knackered totaly!
Hmm, must think of another way through.
Looks like I,ll have to bump into some other sticky out bit to get Me bearings.
SV didn,t want to go through there with Me.
When I joined You on Searush You didn't seem to want to poke yer nose in the Swellies either.
Listen Chaps it's ok in there, I know it rushes about a Bit.
But I,ve hit all the Rocks.
What's the Problem?

Thats it , you have done it, you have gone and got yourself addicted to the instructor learning thing, [ you learning more each time]:D /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif it only gets worse. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yup, beacon on swellies rock, heading towards Menai as Kwaka spotted. We were going thro' about an hour early - tide doing about 4-5 kts. As you need another 5 kts boat speed to maintain steerage thro' the whirlpools & eddies it's very exciting but all over very quick.

It's also possible to do the return journey about an hour late in similar conditions. If I can do it with only 6kts max, proper stinkprops shouldn't have too much trouble. BUT; I wouldn't try heading the tide at that speed.

I'll try to load a few pics of other trips. It's a gorgeous spot at the right time, deep green water right up to the edge of the channel. A very special place.

Of course you'll be able to! You just need to do it at the right time - everyone else will be doing the same (well except Kawasaki and some ski boat with a humungus engine that sounds like a spitfire going past).

Good views of

Swellies on Flash Earth:

To put it into perspective, have a look at the notes from the current Menai Straits Pilot (i.e the man, not a book) here. He takes SHIPS through the swellies (Be careful not to hit the huge, unlit ship mooring buoys between Menai Bridge and Bangor, btw. It would spoil your day.)

I don't think it's chart-plotter territory, though - pure pilotage. There's roughly a mile between the bridges - say you're taking it easy - 20kn?? That's 3 minutes end-end, so you need to know where you're going before you get there /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If the depth alarm goes off, you've either just passed over something, or just hit it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That said, I guess your boat will draw a lot less than a raggie, and have engine power to spare.

Lots of good aerial photos around the Straits on Bangor Uni's site: www.pixaerial.com Like this one:
