When checking the gearbox oil level on a Yanmar 1GM10 should it be up to the mark with the dipstick screwed home or just ‘dipped’?

In my Yanmar Operation Manual, page 41.....

" Lube oil to the reduction and reversing gear case
For the checking of the amount of lube oil to the reduction and reversing gear case, check with screwing the dip stick."

I have just found a manual on line that gives the opposite advice!

"Reinsert the dipstick without screw in"

Maybe the method depends on the age of the engine or design of the dipstick.

Sorry to add to the confusion. Hopefully someone else knows what's best.

And what difference is 1cm going to make?

1 cm in that size of gearbox and capacity of 0.3l is quite significant I would guess.

In practice it won't make any difference ... but usually a screw thread needs to be rested on the casting and a push-fit needs to be pushed. However, it's the exception which proves the rule.
