12v wire colour

Need to extend the wire on the autohelm tiller pilot.

The unit is brown and blue so am assuming brown is +ve.

The new lead is red and black. Am I safe to assume red is +ve?

Sorry this may seem a stupid question, don't worry, I have loads more!

Must be right, Peter, it's certainly what I'd assume.
And if it's wrong, you'll turn left instead of right and vice versa, so nothing serious.

I'd stick my multi-meter in there as a double check.

it dos not matter what wire you connect to what as you are extending it as you will replace one for the other but to keep to logic for wire id in the future
brown to red .. (as use for a live wire in most cases )
and blue to black.... (as used as negative in most cases )

Thanks for the info Clive but the one I have inhereted is prehistoric and has a cockpit unit that has the buttons on and two cables. Will have to see how it works (have got the booklet). Sailing singlehanded a lot I like having a spare so may end up replacing it with something a little more modern. I just need an autopilot, have no plans to drive boat from chart table.
