I need to rewire the 12v mast electrics. I have a tri colour light at the top and a white steaming light half way up. At the moment these lights still have the old type bulbs. My questions are. 1. What size twin core wire do I use ? - 2 The best place to buy marine grade twin core wire. I estimate I am going to need about 18m of wire.

I would see if the existing lights could be converted to LED. This place is good Boatlamps - Marine LED bulbs and replacement lamps for all boats for LED bulbs, not the cheapest.
When I rewired I used standard 2.5mm 3 core flex cable for the tri and white light and then some 3 core tinned cable for the steaming / deck light. I can't remember cable size but possibly 1.5mm.
Cable can purchased possibly through you local chandlery or Auto & Marine Electrical Components & Accessories | 12 Volt Planet . 12 volt planet also do reasonable quality crimp fittings (don't forget a decent crimper Insulated Terminal Ratchet Crimping Tool - Standard Duty ) though https://www.screwfix.com/searchsearch=wago221seriespromo&category=cat7230015 I was using these a lot more below decks. Other suppliers are available .....

Cable size may seem excessive but it is only 12 volts and presumably your quoted 18m of wire is one way only.

Thankyou for your reply. The way the boat has been wired is the switch panel has two switches that operate the nav lights. One switch marked as steaming lights, when switched on the lower bi coloured light at the bow along with the white stern light and the mast steaming light are on when motoring, when sailing that switch is turned off and a switch marked mast tri colour is turned on. I will be looking into changing all my lights over to LED,s the thing is I have a number of the old type bulbs that I would like to use first. They will last me a good while as I do not do much night sailing. Thank you for the links.

I think 12 volt planet have a wire size calculator on their website where you put in wattage, cable run length etc and it’ll tell you what wire size you need.

Apologies for not answering the question you asked, but if it were my boat I'd be fitting a 3rd switch, so the deck level nav lights could be turned on without the steaming light. This is a) for when the tricolour fails, and b) for sailing in close quarters, where deck level lights are more likely to be seen.

It is all very well to calculate min sized wire needed. However small wires will corrode and fail sooner than heavy wires. Go for as thick wires as seems reasonable. ol'will

I agree, I have put a like to your reply. It would mean a lot of faffing about and it is unlikely I would be sailing at night in a close quarter situation. Thankyou for your reply

They supply the switch prewired. .
Supplied with a single 3 position switch to control 2 lights, which is not how most switch panels are designed, so changes to the switch panel required. The Nasa combo light is not a drop in replacement for other combined masthead lights. If, as on some boats including mine, the masthead all round white is used as both an anchor light and a combined steaming/stern light when motoring then you have no chance of using the unconventional Nasa way of doing things to fit in with the existing panel configuration.

This is an alternative conventionally wired LED combo light from Osculati...

You’re quite right and I haven’t got one in out boat. However it was something for the OP to consider with the advantage of it being relatively cheap.
