Can I ask, for my own interest, how many forum users still have, or have had, a bukh engine with a bukh saildrive attached?

That's a just a short list of the subjects that can lead to long running threads and quite often online 'punch-ups' ....

Its not unknown for someone to just start a thread on ie anchors - just to see how far it goes ...
 
Depends on the saildrive as most engines can be modified to fit. Just requires that the saildrive is a coupled split shaft driven version.

I can't rememember how many boats I've owned over the years (must be upwards of twenty), but not one of them has had a sail drive: so my ignorance about them is both deep and profound.

No worries ...

Its simple really .. engines are engines ... and output is via a shaft. Whether that shaft engages a shaft that exits hull via a standard gearbox / fixed shaft or into a 90 deg gearbox for sail drive - it really doesn't care. Its all just basically bolted together.

Even the engine + saildrive 'single' units are still an engine bolted to a 90deg gearbox / drive. Just more convenient to lift in / lift out ! and usually more compact.
 
I had a 10hp Bukh and matching sail drive, 30years ago.

I had not problems. I loved the fact it could did not need a battery start.

As you have ascertained everyone is an expert on anchors - few have used the combination of Bukh and Saildrive

Lucky b****** ... last inboard engine I could hand start on any of my boats was the old Vire ... a common need due to Dynastart being crap !
My present Perkins - if a London Cabby could have a handle for emergency start of same - why can I not have ?? The crank pulley for mine is a plain pulley without handle provision. I suppose I could always try sourcing a handle suitable pulley ... whether I could ever get the crankshaft nut off though is another matter !!

I once helped a friend hand start a bukh 20.We took it in turns and were on the point of giving up when it fired.It was a warm day if cold it would be impossible imho.

Sorry to op I know nothing about bukh saildrives.I lnow there is a Bukh owners facebook group which is very active I would ask on there.

Only very small numbers of Bukh saildrives were built, and most getting on for 30 years ago. Very few made it to the UK so not surprising that you did not get a response. What was you question, as it might be generic and your thread was ignored because of the Bukh bit.

Everybody has an anchor, and many have strong views on the subject - or just like arguing and the subject is good for that.

I had a Vega with the combi drive with a variable pitch prop, my engine was an MD6a that could also be started by hand, the dynastart could not keep up with the auto pilot, so the hand start was a godsend at times.

Was tempted to say well informed constructive discussion, but then remembered that only applied to a small minority of the posts on such threads. Some good stuff does pop up from time to time, though.
 
Anchoring is one of the few subjects where you can ask a sensible question and receive a refusal to answer. :unsure:

I think he gave up as he eventually realised he was wrong.
If you have a correctly sized anchor, by that, I mean one with a large fluke area and powerful engine to set it.
Do you need a snubber that stretches several feet? sounds very amateurish to me
And the only reason I can see for having one is your anchor is under sizes as the loads applied without the snubber pulls it through the bottom.
If you need a gently action a rated mooring spring will take all the snatching away

Best to get a high holding modern anchor I can recommend Manson
Supreme, there are others available
