I thought a light year was a measure of distance expressed in time.

That is, the distance travelled by light in one year . Being a distance it could be expressed in metric or imperial terms but the practicalities of writing such large figures have led to looking at it another way.

I was going to write the figure but then I realised just how big it is.
From memory: 186 000 miles a second multiplied by the number of seconds in a year.

Enough , my mind is starting to boggle.
