‘Converting’ my Day Skipper Practical to ICC

Did my day skipper practical a while back. Am I right in saying I can now apply for an ICC? I would like to charter a boat abroad at some point and I’m told an ICC is the thing to have.
 
Correct. There's a form you send to the RYA with a copy of your certificate, they send back an ICC.

RYA members get it free, and the non-members' fee is set the same as what it costs to join, as an obvious way of encouraging membership which strikes me as a little seedy. The ICC expires after a few years (can't remember how often) and you have to renew (same process) - so if you just have a vague intention of chartering abroad "one day", it might make sense to hold off until you have a firm plan.

Agree with you that an ICC document is best abroad for boat hire AND most reputable places will check the date.

Yes if you are a member of the RYA you can apply free BUT One point, even if you are a member of the RYA if you do not pay by 'standing order' they will return your application as then you need to also send them some identity such as copy of a household bill (addressed to you) and your passport number (I just copied the relevant page in my passport).

IF you are an RYA member and pay by 'standing order' then no problem just apply

Takes about three weeks usually
 
I was sailing my SSR registered 12m yacht in Italian waters and upon entering a new port was asked to produce my ships papers at the harbour office, which turned out to be the Naval Headquarters. I sat down with the port official who was a naval officer and laid out my logbook, chart and my RYA certificates including my ICC on the table before us. He immediately seized upon the ICC and was very happy, as was I, that I had one of these. Then he asked his orderly to serve coffee and as he perused my logbook and chart in some detail I relaxed with a delicious espresso, thankful that I had remembered to send off the forms to the RYA in time.
 
A friends son was boarded in Portugal this year. He had all papers in order with his yachtmaster aswell. His icc was onboard but in the depth of some locker so wasn’t with his paperwork. The officials were going to fine him for not having his icc.
Suffice to say he made them wait while he systematically went through his lockers much to their annoyance. Hey presto the ICC produced. Much relief at not receiving a several hundred euro fine.

Sounds extremely atypical.
