£20K boat for west coast scotland

www.burtonwaters.co.uk have a nice looking Moody 28 at just under £20K.

That Moody might be available for a good offer, she has been through e bay a couple of times but don't think she sold. However the layout means the kids have a cabin each and there own space to chill out in and at opposite ends of the boat when they have fallen out with each other. This leaves mum and dad to sleep in the main cabin, so you don't distrub the kids if you stay up late. Works well for us even during a fortnights hols. Good owners association too.

Based on your timing the autumn used boat show period would make sense. You can either tour the Clyde brokers on the actual weekend so getting the best pick, or wait a week or two then go round, sellers are then more willing to take a sensible offer.

Good luck

Elizabethan 30? David Thomas design, older boats go for less than £20k Found one for a lot less here!!!! Elizabethan 33s are also available around that price, a recentone on the EOA website for £26k or offer.

A lot depends on where you intend to keep boat. On the west coast there are many places with no facilities - not even a wall to lie against! It sounds ridiculous in a deep water area but, in such a place eg west coast of Skye, you are better off with twin keels, preferably iron not GRP, so that you can easily beach your boat for work below waterline.

Good point Red. Boat will be at Ardrossan on the clyde for the first winter, and then moving up to Argyll, so fairly close to main west coast yachting facilities, although hopefully on a secure but not too expensive/ remote swing mooring. I do like the ability to beach, but think I will go for fin and skeg or long keel.

Check out that Liz 30 ref by Eva. You won't find a boat cheaper than that. Other than being in Greece (bit too much of a delivery trip for me), I wonder just what is wrong with it, or if sellers are just very, very keen to sell!

thanks for all the feedback. Keep em coming!

PhotoDog.... I don't need this pressure at all! I keep seeing the Dufour Classic online & always think... oh that looks good.... then remember they don't make em with twin dangly bits.

Afraid we have absolutely stressed the need to be able to dry out... so mostly looking at older BK boats (Colvic Countess the fave)

Moody 28 are good boats and a bit of a tardis down below. We had one 1986 -1990. Good to sail and easy to maintain

Suprised nobody has mentioned the westerly 31 range,Pentland,Renown,Longbow and Berwick. You can pick and choose between fin and bilge, sloop or ketch, aft cabin or not. Good ,well built sea-worthy boats in the 15-18 K bracket. You can sail all summer and then spend the winter sticking the headlining in the forecabin back up!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have had my beady eye on that Marieholm for a few months now. Looks like it could need a bit of fettling, though It was originally asking 24k. If it could be got for (say) 16k it would be a great buy for someone.
They are roomy, solid and were very expensive new. Pity it is so far away for the poster to have a quick look at.
......by the way, buying at this level you would always expect a kedge, often a tender and rarely a liferaft.

There is a Colvic Sailer 29ft on ebay in your part of the world, it has a buy it now of £23K (and you can make an offer too), by the look of the inventory and the amount of work he has done to it I would say it would be a good buy.

These don't come up very often, I was looking at one a few years back and really kicked myself that I didn't go for it, they are cavenous inside!

a big variety of suggestions here, which is geat

but also very big variety sailing abilities - sigma 33 will sail beautifully and fast (albeit may be hard used and worn), colvic atlanta and early generation westerleys substantially less performance - ie lots more motoring.
sadler 29 a good middle bet. not sure the age of moody 28 but like westerles moodies range from somewhat slow to very spritely based upon specific model (and importantly name of designer)

We looked at this boat today.

Its good boat, size wise and accomodation is very good.
Its beginning to look a bit old though, needs a lot of tidying up.

SWMBO thought the interior could do with a complete rework, and I kind of agree if its for a family.
There are quite a few hairline grazing cracks, a few chipped corners on the topside, windows are needing resealed, and the perspex glazing is all cracked over with age. The gel is an old beige/grey colour.

Bacially I liked the boat, but it needs a lot of work doing to it.

Its up for £21,950. If I were to make an offer I'd be starting at about £16k and spend some money on it making it a lovely boat.

I'm not offering on it though, but it might be worth the origional poster looking at it, if he fancies a project.

I don't have a clue how it would sail though.

Cheers

Al.
