I think people have a choice: a mud berth or a floating berth. If you're happy with a mud berth then Thornbury Sailing Club or Burnham on Sea are fine. If you want to float, then you can go to Cardiff, Portishead or Swansea. If you're happy anchoring, then somewhere like Blue Anchor or Porlock...
I did that trip in reverse last year. As far as the east coast of Ireland is concerned, I did:
Stranraer -> Bangor (Belfast)
Bangor -> Ardglass
Ardglass -> Dun Laoghaire
Dun Laoghaire -> Cahore Point (anchorage)
Cahore Point -> South Skomer (anchorage)
I managed the Irish Sea crossing in...
Can someone help me understand the above text? Is it saying that Cowes local authority can't match the funding provided by Cardiff local authority? Is it saying that Cowes local authority can't match the private funding that some businessmen in Cardiff have put in? Allan says in another post (if...
Does anyone know what happened to the East Mid Grounds buoy? I sailed past it on Saturday morning and it looked like it had been squashed: as though some large ship had ploughed over the top of it. When I sailed back it had been replaced with a new version by a Trinity House ship.
If it had...
A marina at Porthcawl would be a dream. It's somewhere I'd love to go. There looks to be some good walking near there and seems to be a good distance from Portishead. All in all I think it would be an excellent place to go to.
I know it's too late for Chuteman, but my experiences of Loch Ryan were...
- Lady Bay seemed fine to me. Maybe I was so tired when I got there that I didn't notice any ferry wash that was there: out like a light! Wash certainly didn't seem like a big issue to me. It was one of my first nights...
My view is that those Raymarine autopilots don't work properly. Mine doesn't work on my Contessa 26 unless the winds are very light. The thing I do not understand is why the "off course alarm" sounds when the tiller isn't pushed over as far as the autopilot could take it. If the boat is going...
I have the same concern as you about these types of seals in mucky water. If I take a bowl full of water from the sea where I sail, there will be sand in the base of the bowl once it settles. I can't believe it is a good idea to be pumping sandy water through a seal like this. It seems like a...
I think it is OK being attached to a mooring buoy in a force 3, maybe 4, on the east side of Lundy. We've done it. It's a bit bumpy and I wouldn't want to go ashore. You're likely to get a mooring buoy in those conditions as no-one else will want to be there.
I moored up at Lundy last weekend...
I didn't race on the Sunday, but....
The wind was probably a southerly and something like an F5/6 gusting F7. The sea state between Cardiff and Portishead was actually pretty benign considering what it could have been like (well it was sort of benign if you were on a beam reach). The heavy rain...
I found that weekend to be generally pretty frustrating.
I got up really early to lock out of Portishead at 0830. On driving into Portishead, it was clear that there was genuinely no wind: not a puff. Given the option of chugging somewhere or mooching around in Waitrose, I chose Waitrose. By...
