FAO Chemists: Is there any way to warn of a battery acid leak?

THis is easily done with a cheap fire alarm. I use the same system to give me an early warning of either the wife burning the toast or water in the bilge. Make sure the alarm you buy has a test button most if not all will have. Take a two core wire from the two wires connected to the test...

    RNLI Trent Class number 14-14

I have a picture of this boat but no information of the RNLI station where it is based. I have searched on the RNLI website to no avail. Maybe a forum member may have seen it, any idea's? The first 14 stands for 14 metres and the second 14 is the 14th produced thats all I know. Thanks for any help.

Ouzo - drowned despite lifejackets ?

This brings back memories of the Tulla which was lost on route from Ijmuiden to Harwich in the year 2000, this was a particular shock at the time as I had made the same crossing in a 27ft yacht only two months earlier. Again in the case of the Ouzo I expressed my sincere sympathy with the loss...

    Stainless swivel on mooring?

The easy way to avoid loss of metal from the shackle connected to the stainless swivel is to fit a zinc anode. I use my old pear anodes first drill out one end of the anodes iron bar so that the shackle pin will pass through it and the risers first link, bolt the other end to the riser chain...

Hi All, Just had an e-mail from Service @intl.paypal.com, I have not even opened it as a search on this address came up with it being a Phishing Scam. Evidently it asks for your account details. Maybe others are already aware of this but for those that haven't please be on guard for such...

    Cleaning Propellers

If you want to do a proper job! first use 240 grade wet and dry paper to remove any barnacle glue and marks. Then use Brasso wadding to remove any remaining marks this took me a very loooooooooong time as previously stated. Over several years the barnacles that managed to get on the prop...

    winches - oil or grease?

Brain, I think you will find that under your occupation the correct spelling is Installation and not Istallation, also if you had looked you would have seen that Burnham_Bob sails on the river Crouch out of Burnham-on-Crouch. Like myself an East Coast yachtsman and proud to be so. Best regards...

    VP 2020 not so smooth

The engine should not have a detectable loss of smoothness in that time scale, have you changed something?. Maybe it's as simple as a slight amount of air in the diesel filter, or even a slight air ingress somewhere on the diesel downstream from the pump. Injectors can cause poor balance if one...

    new cutlass bearing play

I wonder what the manufacture tolerance is, I took my cutlass bearing holder and shaft along to Mr Volvo and it took several tries to get an ideal fit. Evidently the bearing should be an interferance fit in the holder. If you have to hammer it in its to tight also it should have no free play. It...

"Farecla gel" for cleaning topsides ?

Re: \"Farecla gel\" for cleaning topsides ? I discovered the G3 & G10 paste last year, it worked a treat on somebody elses boat. If you use it keep the speed of the polisher to 2000 rpm and keep the surface being treated doused with a fine spray of water. If the surface dries out you could...

    Missing Yacht...update

Like others very sorry to hear about your loved boat. I have only just seen the posting, had to think for a while. With regard to the front hatch blowing open, is it possible when the boat sank the stern went first. This would have caused an air lock in the foreward peak the weight of the boat...
