Another one for our northern bretheren

Grand welcome , good food but watch out for the midges when heading for the dinghy.
All I'd add is that your 'need to look at the chart' is what I'd do every time I approached a cardinal I was not familiar with.
I haven't heard anyone propose a better alternative to the current system but I'll give an example of an odd one to look out for.
The East cardinal at the entrance to...
Thanks for the list it is always good to stimulate some thought.
There was one item I'd query "Consider taking horseshoe lifebuoys below"
I'm not I'd ever do that with imminent bad weather, surely that's when you are likely to need then most?
or are you trusting to the fact that everyone will...
Just thought I'd say thanks for all the input I've enjoyed reading.
Some obviously aren't interested but i find the examination of a long held truth refreshing and a good discussion.
Much more interesting than the latest anchor topic!
Yes a couple of times.
The one I used last year, Zennor V, was very 'tired' and not as well equipped with non-sailing kit (cutlery pans etc) as other charters, but the boat sailed well and we enjoyed the weekend.
Certainly last year, the price paid reflected the less than pristine presentation...
Ah hours of fun (and memories of problems involving men, chickens, foxes and a small boat)
Can you use one of your existing threaded halyards to pull through two mousing lines ?
You then rethread your existing halyard and try to pull the spare mousing line out of the appropriate orifice with a...
It is yet another judgement call and that's why boats have skippers.
I've cancelled a couple of charters because the forecast was iffy and most of the crew was inexperienced.
I've also gone around the solent when the forecast looked downright miserable but we had a strong crew. (resulted in one...
Re: Don\'t want to bore people but.... (action pics!)
Yes very pretty and obviously some thought has gone in to it.
eg. mainsheet traveller behind the tiller is unusual these days but I like the look of it.
Hope all goes well.
Great question with good responses, my contribution:
1) reef early, it's easier and no slower than sailing on your ear.
2) always plan the next day with tidal streams etc before you head out for an evening on the beer!
I assume Chubby is more than the name of your boat and that may be why you are considering a 275.
If I owned a boat and used the same approach it may need to be called Fat B*******d, so I purchased a 275N lifejacket on the basis it would need that to turn me over. I am now ready to replace it...
I'm with you on this one.
If they had turned around after 48 hrs and said ' no can do' then refunded your cash, then I'd expect to be disappointed but not upset.
Ten days to check the stock is not good service.
Re: Bob Comlay\'s photos from sailing with Tilman in arctic waters
Thanks for that, I'm just working my way through the 8 climbing and sailing books and I'll view again when I reach the 70's trips
