If you need a chart to identify that particular chain ferry rather than using No1 eyball then I wonder about was one keeping a good lookout with situational awareness whilst sailing.
I live in Sweden and pass the cable ferry in Vaxholm many times a year. There are clear notices on land at both ends of the ferry route, signs on the ferry plus a blinkning orange light. Very difficult to miss if you are awake.

The error with your plan is that the cable attached to the OEM sender is not long enough to go above the leg shield and above the water line. Why not splice as I suggested. I have experience of doing both the port and stb senders and after serveral seasons they are still water proof. Do the job...
