    Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge

I had always assumed I would have to lower the gaff as per my OP. The gaff is significantly higher than the mast top. The issue is whether I can get the mast under. Certainly your view is more positive than the earlier data suggested. I have only ever previously viewed the bridge from a much...

    Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge

What I wonderful idea. The only problem is I must employ pythagoras live as I approach the bridge! I can easily provide the necessary ballast as a fat bloke though. Not quite that simple as she is a Loch Broom Post Boat with the mast fore stay attached to the for'ard end of the bowsprit - not...

    Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge

Yes, it was the pay per use and good parking that prompted me to ask the question. My air draft is just short of 6 metres so I might be in with a chance. I guess I need to take courage in both hands and nose up to it. Thank you. What worries me now is any variation of the maintained height of...

    Astondoa 39

I sold my boat just before Christams so not down there as frequently as I used to be. I see she's with Ocean Boat Sales which is Jason Rowles' brokerage so likely been in the Marina during the period he held sway for Tingdene. (I was parked up the other end). Jason's one of the 'better' brokers...

    Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately my mast is too tall whichever way it's calculated. It seems odd that there are no public slipways into the Bay.

    Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge

Brilliant! Many thanks. I'm currently 'between chart plotters' having sold my last one with the previous boat. I was going for an app-based approach this time with a dayboat but evenso I'm not sure many charts have data for this particular bridge.

    Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere......... Does anyone know the navigable height under the Cardiff Bay Link Road Bridge (where the Taff enters Cardiff Bay)? Having retired from 'big' boating, I'd like to teach the grandchilden to sail in my...

    Mobile Internet provider? Portishead marina

Have a look to see if you can spot a WiFi aerial. From memory, I think they're a flat aerial mounted on a post just above head height. If you're on G pontoon I'd have thought you were nicely in the middle of at least a couple but I may be being over-optimistic!

    Mobile Internet provider? Portishead marina

I've never had a problem with Vodafone but then I don't tend to use it for streaming movies etc when I'm aboard. Ordinary internet access is OK though. If you're a berth holder, can't you access the Marina's own WiFi? Not tried it myself for a couple of years but it was OK last time I used it...

    Volvo, Yanmar or Nanni?

At the risk of provoking strongly-held views, which engine make has the best reputation? I'm thinking about down-sizing to a used 25 foot-ish single-engined MoBo, say something like a Merry Fisher 805, with less than 1000 hours on the clock. Many examples of this type currently for sale seem...

Boat transport by water and tuition

Sadly, I think you'll find Kath & Jake retired (to Scotland?) some time ago. There's another sea school in Portishead now but I don't know how good it is. A couple of years ago I came across a couple of ex-RNLI Coxswains who would do delivery voyages and owner tuition at the same time. I did...

Totally spooked out by my first ever boat

Own-boat tuition together with one or two others you are likely to go boating with works well in my experience. It is more cost-effective and you can watch each other as you all learn. Helps the 'crew' know what to expect in future as well!

    Buying With Non-Working Hours Meter

I had two 225Ls with good old fashioned rotating digits. Trouble was they were electrically driven. One did fail so we just went off the other engine.
