Living on a boat in Portugal

Light dues were 70e at Viana do Castelo. However a circulation taxe was never mentioned - who issues that if not the Capitania? Has anyone been asked to show proof of payment?

First time crossing a border by sea since Brexit…..

Thanks all, I have my boatyard presence on B day confirmed with invoice and a letter from the boatyard. I am pleased to hear that I don’t have to worry about checking out and in - until we get to Gib to stop the 90 day clock, but at the pace we move that’s at least a couple of years away!

First time crossing a border by sea since Brexit…..

We will be arriving and leaving by air, so checking in and out of Schengen is taken care of for us. I know when we cross the Portuguese border by car that we don't need to check ourselves out of Spain and in to Portugal. I’m just checking whether the rules are different when taking the boat...

First time crossing a border by sea since Brexit…..

We arrived in Northern Spain in 2018 and the boat has been there since. This year we will head down the coast to Portugal. Pre-Brexit we didn’t have to check out of France and customs officers came to us when we arrived in Spain (they arrived within 10 minutes of arriving, before we even...

    Coolant for Volvo 2040?

£51 buys you 5L of concentrated coolant. I think that gets you 12.5 litres when diluted (unless you live in a very cold climate)

    Orca attack

Fishtek’s minimum order in the U.K. is also 5 at £75 each. Carriage to Europe is £30 approx and I’m not sure they charge any less for the UI. Is anyone interested in sharing an order for delivery in U.K.? PM me if so.

France 6 month visa looks near on impossible

That sounds like hell to me (but then again we took 3 years of 5 month seasons to get from Scotland to Galicia). We do not sail in uncomfortable conditions! Personally I wouldn’t want to be heading up the Portuguese west coast other than very early season. So maybe the OP could book a berth on...

    Orca attack

Has anybody watched the Frozen Planet episode of a group of Orcas hunting a Minke whale? A different sub-population, but some similarities to yacht attacks (biting and ramming). See HERE

    Cast iron keel prep

When researching this some time ago I came to the conclusion (after reading many different advisory articles/posts) that with a cast iron keel the way to go was to sandblast and then use a needle gun to remove deeper rust, and then apply whatever protective coatings on top as quickly as...

Keypart 876286 zinc anode for 120 saildrive new and unopened pack - £25.60 plus postage from Keypart - £15 including postage (U.K. standard price destinations). I have a rope cutter so no good for me.

Cruising Association/Knox Johnson open letter re 90/180 day problem

I think that some are confusing a tourist visa with a work visa. The U.K. already offers most if not all EU citizens to come to the U.K. for tourism for up to 6 months without requiring a visa. What was rejected was a reciprocal work visa. The Schengen Zone countries have disagreed on more...

crusader sails are a rip off

In post #1 the OP referred to Crusader Sails as a “one man band”. When they provided me with an excellent service in adding a sacrificial strip and foam luff to a Vectran genoa that the previous owner had used for racing (so never furled) I visited the loft and they were clearly a sizeable...

    Mike Peyton painting

Sold for £36! I thought the auctioneer had misjudged his guide price and that it would do better than that. I think I would have stumped up the £50 postage at that. More for owning a Peyton original than loving the painting - although I do quite like it.
