going astern in a folkboat/stella is it possiable

Yes its possible! But you need so much way on that it is potentially dangerous in close quarters! Our wooden Nordic has an offset outboard and this makes it worse. A hint is to use the outboard and the tiller together to steer, both forwards and astern. Also when going astern face the stern and...

    Removing black marks -painted GRP?

Thanks for advice. It's why I asked as I realise that anything abrasive like T Cut is going to dull the paint - paint, not gelcoat! Also there are so many other cleaning products on the market I knew somebody would have an answer from experience.

    Removing black marks -painted GRP?

Any advice re safe removal of black marks from white painted GRP hull surface? Probably caused by tyres on pontoon.

    A very dumb question

With regard to advice re "copperslip". Do not apply liberally! A little is enough as any grease in excess attracts dirt which acts as grinding paste next time you undo the nut/bolt. A bead down the length of the bolt threads is all that is required. Excess grease in a blind threaded situation...

    ANTIFOULING -does it work? Discuss.

Wooden clinker Nordic Folkboat in Bangor marina, Northern Ireland year round with a lift out once a year to clean down and re-new. Coastal trip to Carlingford Lough this year where she was raced hard in Irish Sea FB Rally. International Cruiser Uno used 2003 & 2004 with International Primocon...

    Radio Licence Penalties

I seem to remember a recent statement from Ofcom that they were considering doing away with the marine VHF radio licence (or was it the fee?). Is this still the case? For what it's worth I think a licence fee is simply a tax and if it costs more to administer than it collects it should be...

    Shear strength of stainless bolts

Re: and waht size pins are in shackles etc. As previous - very important that shear is not applied across threads. Measure plain length (part of bolt not threaded) required allowing for fitting and washers and buy accordingly. Inevitably they will be too long in the thread but can be cut and...

    New copper fastenings

Re: copper fastenings Thanks everyone for the useful advice. I knew I should take with a pinch of salt the advice to caulk the planks! This from an "old gaffer" too! The boat is coming out of the water Wednesday and will hopefully be examined the next day. I want an expert to look at it in...

    boat on a lorry

If you are any where near the West Country see "Folkboat Trailer" post, 28/7/04 on the Classic Boat forum. Frames can be bought and are not cheap - see classifieds back of PBO, or could be made by handy person!

    New copper fastenings

Thanks for the info. She's a 1962 Swedish built Nordic Folkboat in good order with no broken frames etc. However she is raced hard and has taken a pounding. The leaks and associated apparent nail wear appear to be starboard quarter ahead of the mast and a few planks above the garboard - if you...

    New copper fastenings

Anybody replaced roved copper nails in a clinker boat? Some need replacing as the heads (points?) have gone green, showing green streaks of water from behind the frame where they are fastened and presumably allowing movement of the planks allowing water in - which happens to varying degrees when...

    CB varnish test April 04

I'm no expert and have learned the hard way - trial and error! However I do not think I would take the trouble to lay a teak deck then cover it with Coelan. I think it probably depends on whether you want a weathered grey finish which you maintain by regularly scrubbing with sea water then...

    Folkboat Trailer

Re: Folboat Insurance Firstly, I would recommend you join the Folkboat Association, contact Peter Ament at folkboatuk2@aol.com. A wealth of information is available from members via a (somewhat slow) folkboat forum and a comprehensive member list of names, boats and home ports - you can be sure...

    Folkboat Trailer

If you just need temporary transport I can recommend West Country Transport, Mark Davies, 01566 785651. He brought our Folkboat from Gweek Quay to Bangor Northern Ireland, was helpful, reasonably priced and did not put a mark on it!

    Chart plotter amperage?

Thanks for all the replies, they are very helpful. I did find a reference to the Lowrance 3300C on an angling site that stated that it ran off two AA batteries for 8 hours, so I should have been able to work it out for myself, but the first hand information is better.
