    Simple GPS Watch

http://sites.garmin.com/en-US/quatix/ http://www.marinesuperstore.com/garmin-quatix-marine-sailing-watch Works for me, mainly for range/bearing to next waypoint, but also can display lat/long. Tap course into Garmin Bluechart on phone or iPad, Bluetooth to phone, etc. Can also plug into...

    Blue ensign dick'ed

Go on, you know you want to. Get a *white* Scottish ensign made up, then come sail in the Solent near West Cowes ;-) Disclosure: Scots Red as house flag on port (sometimes a two-yard battle ensign); 3/4 yard un-defaced, but sewn Red on the backstay (sometimes a full yard for special occasions)...

    Boaty Slang

"Engage the silent drive" : turn the engine off. "Rig ship for ultra-quiet" : turn the radio off, too.

    What is a boat captain?

So somewhere between Chief Engineer, Crew Boss and Sailing Master - to mix metaphors ;-)

    Nespresso Machine from 12 Volt

Some people might not appreciate Highland Park (I do!), so maybe some Hendricks or Blackwoods gin and a tiny bottle of angostura might cater for those of "alternative tastes". For your own boat, you should make sure "We have rum from the Caribbean and burgundy from France"...

    Nespresso Machine from 12 Volt

Excellent! All you need is the sewing kit for whipping & sail repair, and the spanner for fixing heads/engines, and you can be sure of being invited back onboard ;-)

    Nespresso Machine from 12 Volt

An Aeropress. No Volts (& hence amps & watts) Required.

Do you speak to buoys !

I always wave my hand at Sconce. The charts says "Wave operated buoy" and so far, it's never failed to ring its bell in reply...

Quality coffee in a Tea bag!! Making coffee on a boat never been so good

Thanks, that's worth a try. (You knew I converted my coolbox into a powered fridge a couple of years ago, right? ;-)

Quality coffee in a Tea bag!! Making coffee on a boat never been so good

Aeropress gets my vote. I tried using #2 moka pot (not my decent Lavazza one) on the boat ; after two winters the not-polished, not-ally metal had corroded. Plastic doesn't. Aeropress rather closer to espresso, but stove-top is also fine, in its own way. Is anyone able to address the...

BBC Radio 4 "The Reunion" 12-4-2015 - about the '79 Fastnet Race

Nice mention of RRS 4 "The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.". I wonder how the tabloids would try to "apportion blame" if anything similar were to happen this year, (when I'm doing my second one ;-)

    Responsibility

I sail with my children, under the red ensign, on a British Ship: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1995/21/section/105 You don't have to say this bit first, but it might help ;-) "Our Sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons, being assembled, immediately to disperse...

solent weekends - finding a nice spot to stay - do you have to book these days??

Ignore that, it's all way out of date, and most of those places to moor have closed, are silted up or were eaten by a giant squid. Port Solent and Cowes Haven are MuchNicer, trust me! :-> I mean, what kind of poor pleb can only afford to pay £13 a night to the IOW council for Ryde or Newport...

Astronavigation - what do I need to take besides a sextant?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Barefoot-Navigator-Jack-Lagan/dp/1574092324 Latititude by stick; Longditude by stick (and a cheap quartz watch). Also has some handy EoT, sun declination at noon tables/graphs to laminate and stick in your grab-bag. Why have I just thought of an opportunity to sell...

Cost p.a. of keeping your boat

If I walk home instead of getting the bus, I save £1.50. If I walk home instead of getting a taxi, I save £20. I *never* get a taxi.
