    Lewmar Electric Winch Servicing

Thank you for that. Just what I needed. Its a shame the servicing of the Electronic Winches is not covered by the Lewmar Winch Servicing Manuals. They are full of excellent info and a real help with part numbers and for doing the Manual Winch Servicing. Shame they didn't just add the bit...

    Lewmar Electric Winch Servicing

I have a Lewmar ST40 Ocean Electric Winch. I can't work out how to remove the drive side gear assembly so that I can service the pawls etc. Removing the whole gear support pillar will break the bolt sealing and seems excessive. Anyone know how to do this service?

ST60 Wind Masthead Mount Removal Tips

Trying to remove the old style Raymarine ST60 Wind Sensor mount - the aluminium block type mount. I can't get the two securing slot headed bolts to move; the nuts came off easily. I am at anchor and climbing the mast so access from above is hard. Any tips on getting these old blocks off?

    Solar Panel CBs

Its just the opposite sadly. The CB pops when the panels are hot and the sun suddenly vanishes. It could be a reverse feed through the CB from one panel to the other. That is easy enough to check when I get the conditions.

    Solar Panel CBs

My Solar Panel Circuit Breaker keeps popping and I can’t work out why. I have two 12v 125w panels connected in a parallel configuration through separate 10amp CBs to a 30amp regulator. One CB keeps popping and the other doesn’t. The odd bit is it only pops when the weather quickly turns from...

Autopilot Hydraulic Linear Drive on Ebay

This hydraulic linear drive system is for a yacht with manual steering. It fits to the quadrant on the rudder stock to turn the rudder.

Autopilot Hydraulic Linear Drive on Ebay

I am getting rid of an unused HyPro HS40plus hydraulic linear drive autopilot system that I carried as a spare on a circumnavigation. It is 2 years old, in its original box and has never been fitted. It is a pre-filled hydraulic system comprising a cylinder with clutch, pump and reservoir. It...

    LRC certificate

I tried to do my LRC at Lowestoft but they didn’t hold a course for over 2 years. I got a copy of the Seafish learning manual. I thought it pretty poor and not much good for the recreational user. I did keep it for 2 years for reference but never looked at it. I chucked it away yesterday to...

    Liveaboard Blogs and Websites

Year 2 of a 10ish year circumnavigation on a 39ft Beneteau called Shiraz after the city of poets, gardens, wine, nightingales and flowers. I usually shorten that explanation to the city of love and peace. http://www.sailblogs.com/member/shiraz/

Volvo replacement engine hour counter wiring

I have an ‘ignition-on’ counter and am very happy with it. If I leave the ignition ‘on’ when the engine is not running it powers various things like the engine compartment vent fans and drains the battery. Out of habit I keep going with the engine running log and never really bother with the...

    Propane Bottles

I got a set of those because I was fussing about gas in the Caribbean. So far I have only used UK Calor Butane adaptor and the Camping Gaz adaptor. I am still using my 4.5Kg UK Calor Butane cylinders. The are currently filled with propane. I have had them filled in Cape Verde, St Lucia and...

    Propane Bottles

Urban Myth! The vapour pressure of butane is about 30psi, which is about what you put in your car tyres. The vapour pressure of propane is about 100psi, just over what I put in my bicycle tyres. A steel container to sustain an internal pressure of 100psi is paper thin. LPG cylinders are...

    pirate question from journalist

You have a good point about not risking the boat but it is not you that is putting the delivery skipper at risk. He is putting himself at risk, along with his paid crew. He is not in your direct employ. He takes a job knowing the situation and the risks associated with it. He has an option...

    pirate question from journalist

Far too risky to do it myself and so I have changed my plans accordingly. No way would I feel comfortable with my offspring doing it. But a paid skipper and crew with my boat sounds fine to me. I give them the money and they take the risk. People pay other people to take risks on their...
