Swallows and Amazons - 5 Stars from Libby

Daughter, now aged nearly 40 loved reading them all. Wants to take her 6 and 8 year old boys but thinks this version might be too old for them. She was reading 'We didn't mean to go to sea' on a channel crossing from Fowey when about 11. We had a cruising shute up, wind gusted, we broached and...

I should have ticked uncertain too, as both I, and old man read the forum under one User name. It won't let me vote twice...

    Falmouth to L'Aberwrach timings

Having done this crossing, but from Plymouth, dozens of times it still can be a worry. As First mate and Swimbo, I am the one who worries! Its the weather that makes the passage a pleasure or a horrible experience. I have found that a call to WeatherLive, a Simon Keeling enterprise before...

    Lichen on teak seating

Thanks all. Tried patio magic, with a brush this morning as forecast was for a dry day. Just had a light shower...........guess I will have to do it again! Hope it will be ok to drip onto our painted alluminium decks? Couldn't see any warning signs re metal.

    Lichen on teak seating

The lichen is a nice green, and shows our Devon air to be clean, but I don't want it on my seat rungs. I have pressure washed them in the past, but apart from the mess, and smell, I don't think its very kind to the wood. Any ideas please?

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Our Avon, over 20 years old is being serviced at the moment. Was there to see it blown up, with a pump, and the service guy said it all looked in excellent condition. However it has a single skin floor, now they are double, and the ladder is not as good as new ones, as it can flop about...

    Calling the 'new' coastguard

Thanks everyone. In response to the above. In the Yealm on our mooring we have zero reception, so cannot listen-in. Knew Brixham shut, obviously, but unclear of the correct form of call to make. Up until last year, if you called Falmouth CG when east of the Dodman they refused to answer. You...

    Calling the 'new' coastguard

Just getting around to thinking about sailing somewhere. It occurred to me that I have no idea who I should call up if I need help or to relay a message. I rarely radio for a check these days, as it seems to be frowned on, and never tell them that I am off somewhere local. If its a big trip...

    GRP v Aluminium?

Boatyard Soprimar in Lisbon repaired a circular ding, (caused by being blown onto an angled corner around a pile, mooring up in a gale). Used aluminium filler, polished you cant see a thing. We would have bashed it out with a hammer from the inside but our Ovni's anchor well has a double skin...

Weather bomb about to hit UK

    River Yealm/Salcombe - Local Info?

The Yealm is our home. Everyone postings are true. Just be aware if its blowing NW or W Cellars is not sheltered. If you draw a lot, yes be careful near low tide at the entrance. Otherwise there is lots of water in the fairway, just look out for a spit buoy, red can, BEFORE the first pontoon...

Bridge warning, River Aulne near Brest

Last weekend we were in Brest, about to go up the Aulne to Port Launay to escape strong NE winds in the Rade. We mentioned this to the boat moored in front, who said they had tried to go up but been put off by cables hanging from the old suspension bridge which is being dismantled in situ. We...

    Roscoff marina

Thanks all Useful info as always from this forum. Leaving either Wed or Thurs now. Will motor as far west as is comfortable! Weather not been too bad here, probably should have gone at the weekend. Sods law again. Have done the N coast in the past many times, that's why the skipper hates...

    Roscoff marina

We have been sitting around now for a week, :( awaiting a forecast for a sail from Plymouth to L'Aberwrach. Will motor if we have to, but really not keen on bashing into a Southerly or S Westerly above a force 4. Its supposed to start our summer 'holiday', not be an endurance test! Anyway...
