River Yealm/Salcombe - Local Info?

The Yealm is our home. Everyone postings are true. Just be aware if its blowing NW or W Cellars is not sheltered. If you draw a lot, yes be careful near low tide at the entrance. Otherwise there is lots of water in the fairway, just look out for a spit buoy, red can, BEFORE the first pontoon. Lots don't see it till very late and the spit dries into a nice hillock at low water! We are in this pool and have over 4 metres even at low springs.

In the river the rule for visitors is that if a mooring buoy is free with no dinghy or message attached, you are welcome to pick it up, (avoid those inshore of the spit). The HM, is about mornings and late afternoon. He will move you if you cannot stay. At 30' you will not have a problem.
The water /ferry/taxi is run by a bloke with a dory who does not work evenings.....in fact he is often AWOL. So a dinghy is essential to get ashore after 6pm.

The Y Club is a fantastic place, the Dolphin has new managers and is much better than of late. The Ship in Noss Mayo is like a Surrey gastropub, v friendly and good food. The Swan.....locals, music and yoof in the evenings. We have a Post office, a chemist, a great butcher, and a tardis called the |Co-op with a cash machine. Why everone does not live here I cannot imagine!

House prices, perhaps? (but maybe you suspected that......) I couldn't afford to buy there in 1975, and that was as close as I have ever been to affording to buy there!

Actually, a few years ago I had some unedifying experience of the friction with and between some of the DFL elements, and now I am much happier living on Dartmoor and visiting the Yealm regularly by boat. A much better option IMHO.

I too live on Dartmoor & visit by boat, would happily live there if I could find the right house at the right price  Was brought up there & went to the old Newton Ferrers primary school :encouragement:

Can I just say thanks for all the advice (and PMs). Spent last night in the Yealm (lovely), Salcombe now (packed... RIB capital of the world it seems!!!), Dartmouth tomorrow.

Thanks all :)

Torbay Regatta is 23-27 Aug and Dartmouth Regatta 28-31 Aug so expect these areas to be busy with racing and crowds for the Red Arrows, fireworks and other displays. Check out the websites for these for full details by Googling Torbay Week and Dartmouth Week. I'm in the Dart and about if you need any assistance or more local info. Enjoy yourselves.

Thanks guys...

I'm not really interested in marinas :nonchalance:

But visitors moorings, pontoons and anchoring where practicable is a goody. I'd rather not have to drag our dinghy all the way, it's a hard floor Proshore 2.9 and doesn't exactly fit anywhere aboard even if deflated a little (babystay in the way).

That may limit you. If you depend on water taxis you will be out of luck everywhere except Dartmouth, Salcombe, Fowey and Falmouth.
