    Shrunken Southampton

Anyone else noticed that Southampton seemed to have imbibed of Lewis Carrol's 'Drink Me' and suddenly become very much smaller. Halls and pontoons. All the nice little 'Thamesable' 30 footers and similar seemed to have vanished as well as a considerable amount of very well known names: Broom...

Time to think outside the box ?

Surely the primary reason that the EA employs the 'Lockies' is to manage the weirs. 'Teddington_lock' and other constantly refer to this (not knocking 'Teddington_lock' whose posts I always enjoy) but the locks are their secondary job and if the weirs call then the lock goes onto 'self...

    shaft vs outdrive

Our Princess 30 DS has twin Volvo Petrols (AQ 151Bs) on outdrives and we have no problem maintaining a normal course - previously have had single shaft boats on the Broads. The twins make close manoeuvring a piece of cake. The only river problem is that the planning hull makes for quite severe...

    Blue School Paint Ball

Lovely Saturday afternoon above Sonning Lock. 'Enhanced' by lots of gunfire and shouting from the Blue School. Is this a new development or a one off?

    Displaying licence

A few years ago we bought our boat from the brokers at T & K and on transfer of ownership happily headed down river for an overnight at Henley. Arrived at Shiplake where the Lockie ( now retired but very popular when he was there) pointed out that our licence was two years out of date. Luckily...

    Self Service Locks

Not having tested my buoyancy for many years I always wear a life jacket when mooring and locking - many folks therefore assume that I'm a Lockie - does get a bit frustrating as one does try not to be rude
