Started boating in S Wales but got fed up with tides and mud so bit the bullet and decided to try the S Coast. Have never regretted it. The drive can be a bit of a problem but once you get to know the short cuts away from the hoards it's only just over 2 hours from Chepstow. We are in Poole but...

Reeds/PBO Almanac for up to date info. Cruising Association Hanbook for useful info and Bloc for French coast. You don't need to be a member of CA to buy a handbook.
There are loads of empty moorings farther up the river. Shortly they can offer you an alternative for the 4 months whilst they do the work. If you have a problem try radclyffe yc as they would do you a deal on one of their deep water moorings over the winter.
My suggestion would be to make sure the tidal stream and the wind are going in the same direction. Upper Bristol channel and both Lands End and the Lizard.

We are at present cruising Britany in our 115 mk1. We have done this every year for the passed 12 years since we bought her. A great boat for a family to long term on.
Problems, yes a few, leaking fuel tank, replaced by cutting out part of hatch. Excellent job by local boat yard. Keel lifting...
Dry out in Blood Alley on the west side of Brownsea Island. Run her aground 2 hours before 1st HW. This should give you time to do what is required.
A wide paint scraper is a possibility but a pot/pan cleaner may help.
