18 years ago I lost my rig due to a fatigue failure of the U-bolt to which the port cap shroud was attached. It was quite a beefy U-bolt and a surveyor had judged it to be adequate without bending it to align it with the shroud. After the failure I did some very rough stress calculations and...
Another factor is that you need to be aware that you can have electrolytic corrosion using graphite packing with stainless steel shafts. Crevice corrosion is a potential problem with any packing, due to the exclusion of oxygen, even with a nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) shaft, as in my case...
I am very happy with my NASA Easy Navtex. The timed switching between channels is a compromise I find acceptable and the big characters a great feature. It has proved reliable, though the reception in harbour can be a bit hit-and-miss (no worse than the Lokata it replaced).
I also have a NASA...
MD7A
Just a thought, but does all the cooling water go into the exhaust? On my boat there is always just a small trickle out of the exhaust, but some of the water is diverted through the prop-shaft Cutless bearing to help with its lubrication.
One other thing, my water pump stopped...
MD7A

After no problem for many years, my MD7 stopped priming after my boat was put on the hard and dried out. Wear on the cover plate was providing a leakage path; a new cover solved the problem.
I have noticed a marked improvement in the quality of the content over the last few months; to the extent of even learning new tricks! As you say, may they long keep it up.
Customs foiled!!!
Take the warnings seriously. If you do not play things straight with Customs & Excise, they have enormous powers and your friend could well lose his boat without any compensation if discovered.
Some years ago I had dealings with both US and UK Customs, who both have similar...
Dead downwind with a cruising chute
I cannot sail dead downwind with my cruising chute and main goosewinged. However, with the main lowered and my largest genoa goosewinged, poled out if necessary, I have a very stable, and powerful, down-wind rig. I am surprised that more people do not appear...
