At last a friend of mine has found a way of running his boat on red diesel on the continent without getting caught !!
He has a filler cap marked for the customs to see and draw samples if required, but this tank only has a couple of gallon of white deisel in it. He also has a secret tank full to the brim with RED diesel for his european cruise, which the customs would never find in a month of Sundays. He got the idea from continental fishing boats that have secret holds for fish that have heavy quotas on. Those cross channel lads come in handy some times.

The customs may draw the sample at the engine or sight the glass filter bowl:D:D

And it cost him how much to install this set up? And he will "save" how much in Fuel costs? And he will worry how much that he might get caught?
Methinks your friend needs more to think about.

Customs foiled!!!

Take the warnings seriously. If you do not play things straight with Customs & Excise, they have enormous powers and your friend could well lose his boat without any compensation if discovered.

Some years ago I had dealings with both US and UK Customs, who both have similar powers. One year, five Canadian 'snow birds' passing down the Chesapeake on the way to Florida lost their boats for no worse a crime than not reporting in to Baltimore Customs on the way through, under the terms of their Cruising Permits.

So where does he obtain the red diesel? Unless he is a farmer,he will have to state what he is using it for when he buys it.

Even Customs are clever enough not to take samples from the "filler". As others have said, DO NOT MESS WITH CUSTOMS, they do not have a sense of humour.
