I fueled and watered up at the Knobs and Snobs marina in Lowestoft . When ready to leave, I flicked the line off the quayside cleat and caught the bunch of keys for the relevant inlets and they ended up in Davy Jones locker.

Anyone selling a boat is almost invariably told to remove their own “junk “ and preset it as it would have been in a showroom. I am considering giving up at the end of this season so should I put all the life jackets, cleaning materials, engine spares etc etc into a skip ?

I have just looked at the diagram of the rudder. I noticed that there is a keyway, presumably to locate the quadrant. The end of a slot like this is ideal for propagation of a fatigue crack and, indeed, the fracture is right next to the quadrant.

I’ve done my 496 twice - over a period of 20 years. Provided you can unscrew the cassette from the stem, it is easy peasy. Lots of online guides. If it breaks , you have to use epoxy and your ingenuity. Make sure you buy SS bearing races.

I’m a bit late to this and haven’t read all eight pages but………… IMHO the decision by RNLI management makes sense but their handling of the volunteers is absolutely sh*t. - not for the first time! Do they have an HR department? If so sack them.
