    TCS Chandlery CAUTION?

Yes - I used TCS the other day and had a perfectly good service from them.

Anyone any experience of Le Tonkinois

Lovely stuff to use, but I found it did not last well with high UV exposure

    Alternatives to deak for decking?

Another vote for Stazo Marine deck. We love it - all that cork makes it feel a bit more natural somehow. Here’s a section being laid on our boat:

Consumer ROV underwater drone in UK ?

Quite so. That’s my experience too. Interestingly Erik Aanderaa (NBJS) used one in Loch Ness on his last video. The gentle drift of his boat made the ROV unusable. Possibly useful in completely still conditions for limited applications, but otherwise I would also opt for a GoPro on a stick.

    What yer get fer Xmas?

I bought Mrs L. a posh rope-threading boathook. I’m hoping for a little less drama on the foredeck. I thought it was very considerate of me. Judging by the response on unwrapping it, I might be alone in that assumption.

What to do with old life raft?

Another vote for children’s paddling pool. My kids loved having a high-tech special paddling pool, but I’m not sure what the neighbours thought of a large bright orange monstrosity, sitting in the middle of our garden!

    YouTube channels to watch

+1 for Alluring Arctic. Juho captures great drone footage. NBJS is OK, as is Bushpoint, both for cruising in northern latitudes. I used to follow Ryan & Sophie, but rather feel they’ve lost focus recently: perhaps when they adopted a child-substitute dog.

    GJW direct Insurance claim

Yep - another vote for GJW. I have found them very good.

What are these Electrical Things ??

We have several of these on our new build. It seemed standard procedure at the Dutch yard. Spares are easily sourced on eBay/Amazon and are reasonably cheap (circa £5.00 ea).

    Dangerously unintelligible VHF exchanges

Many years ago I was working in the North Sea on a Norwegian survey vessel. One evening on the bridge the Skipper asked me to listen to a VHF exchange we were eavesdropping on. “What language is that? It’s not English, I don’t recognise it”, he said. I listened carefully and after a while...

    Selling boat - unusual offers

I wish it was that easy. Stupidly I have twice fallen victim to fraud and despite being able to prove irrefutably and almost immediately that the transactions were fraudulent, the bank assured me there was no way they could retrieve said funds.

A small tale of mice, men, engines and costs ...

Here’s us taking on 900 litres aboard our 45’ sailboat. I think it caused some consternation on the forecourt :-)

    Rowing levers?

I recall having races as a school kid in the manually propelled lifeboats of the educational cruise ship ‘Nevassa’ in the early 1970’s. It was exactly this mechanism. It seemed robust, heavy and pretty slow, but a sure-fire way to burn off all that teenage energy!

    Orca attack

Thanks for the link. I found that a really interesting, well researched article, unlike so much of the rubbish in various papers.

    Orca attack

Well said. I was thinking exactly the same yesterday.
