3 people have three times the volume of one person. On the other hand, a person who is 3 times larger in each direction (width, depth and height) would be 27 times the volume and would need a much bigger boat. I wouldn't want them as my crew.
That's not a crew, that's ballast.
Can be useful if properly loaded.

Reminds me of a time we were having breakfast at a café in Cowes week, the crew of a half tonner at the next table were discussing (at quite high volume for that time of the morning) how they could lighten their boat - drilling holes in the engine box & so on.

The skipper of our boat, who was always extremely direct, interrupted them, and pointing at one of their number said "Why don't you just get rid of that fat bastard ?"

"Er.....it's his boat" came back the reply.
