ZOLEO Satellite Communicator

That Eric Aandera chap has used one extensively and seems to rate it fwiw.

Not felt the need myself personally - always had mobile signal every few days.

Also I think the the new iPhones have satellite comms built in (perhaps only for emergency though). May give an indication in the direction of travel for mobile phone technology

Starlink do similar but usage when mobile attracts a very high tarrif as comms need to switch between satillites. I am not sure what movement counts as stationary,.

Zoleo seems cheaper but as ever the devils in the detail

Next top of the range android devices as well apparently
Many Android phones to get satellite connectivity

Zoleo ain't that cheap-
"with service plans starting at £18/mo"
If its like other systems, the idea is that one pays £18pcm for one 3 month crossing of the Atlantic then go onto £3pcm for dormancy until livening up for heading back. If thats your only likely ocean trip in near future one then cancels and restarts tariff from scratch before another ocean crossing

My son has one that he uses when mountaineering. It is primarily for use as an emergency locator beacon but we do get the occasional brief text message from a summit or when he is safely back down. He minimises use for messaging because he says it is expensive.
