H, can anyone tell me the oil capacity of the ZF 220A gearbox? I have been able to find out just about everything about the ZF220A apart from how much oil I need. I don't have the manual...

Approx 4 litres , you check the level with the engine at idle speed and warm if possible.

Sorry, slightly o/t, but I was recently told to check the ZF350 level when cold and with engine not running.
Do you possibly know if such different method between the 220 and the 350 is correct?

Just in case anyone else is interested:
After my previous post, I googled around a bit to check if I could find any instructions on how to check oil level in ZF g/boxes.
And the most interesting webpage I found is this one.

It's nothing more than a forum webpage of course, but I think that what the users "my3sons" and "MasterFab" say makes good sense, so I tend to believe that the procedure mentioned there is correct.
In the next days I'll give it a try.

Volvopaul is correct (no surprise there!)
My manual says "Marks on dipstick apply at operating temperature (engine idling and controls in neutral)"
It also says to remove and clean the reverse gear oil screen every 250hrs.
Use the correct oil (SAE30 CC,CD,CE - Not multigrade)

The important thing is the spec; SAE30 CC,CD,CE. It's normally used in very old Diesel engines. I could be wrong but I think the reason it's recommended is because it's a low detergent oil so it doesn't foam when being used in a gearbox.
Anyway, point is...use what the manufacturer recommends.

It's motor oil plain 30 W ----- not to be confused with automotive EP 70-90 stuff
Twin disc use it .
Level s warm + idle .
Cold n stop reads higher cos it's drained back from the oil cooler .

I accidentally used 10-40 W once same as for re engines --made no noticeable diff .i changed it back to plain 30W after a few hrs when it's was Convieniant .
We have G box oil pressure and G box temp guages + alarms .
Low pressure it defaults to N - pops out of gears F or R which kinda makes sence to protect itself .

Change out frequency 200 hrs I think ,it's not annual ?

Get SAE30 oil with the right spec.
My manual says every 1000hrs for the oil change and 250hrs for cleaning the filter.
I'd probably change it every 250 with the filter clean, for what it costs.
