Anyone know where I can get an oil cooler for ZF10M box. Tried ASAP. They suggested Bowman but I know that wont do the job.

Well, someone has to ask, why do you want one? ZF say it isn't needed in A gear and only in B gear if you are putting more than 34HP through it.

Have you got the ZF repair manual? There is a drawing in it (page 27) of the cooling attachment together with all part numbers (kit is pt no ), and sundry references to it in text. Might help you.

I can email you the manual if you PM me an email address. Ah, found it, you can download from
http://www.bukh-bremen.de/files/346...Ersatzteilliste ZF3M bis ZF30M mechanisch.pdf

Detail of the cooler here too http://dbmoteurs.fr/sites/default/files/ZF-12-310_01_0089-ZF-DBMOTEURS-DB-MOTEURS.pdf

Might be worth talking to Lancing Marine http://www.lancingmarine.com/

These boxes do not have a good reputation for longevity due to small sump capacity and no oil cooler. Many US marine engineers fit a purpose made oil cooler to the box to prolong its life. The link you give for details of the cooler refers to the ZF12. Thanks for your reply.

When I changed my Hurth box for the ZF10 box I spoke to ZF for some time about reliability, they said changing the gearbox oil every 100 hrs will make a big difference, time will tell !

Read this from Foley Marine Engineers. Seems the ZF10m is known as the dollar an hour gearbox due to its short life. They give interesting tips including fitting oil cooler designed for the box which they supply.I emailed them for details but still waiting for a reply.

I once spoke to one of the hurth zf main agents about these plate actuated mechanical gearboxes.
He stated quite clearly that the issue was usually overloading the gearbox by fitting it to engines close to the gearboxes maximum HP rating.
This combined with sloppy alignment with prop shaft lead to a run out output bearing plus failure of the output shaft oil seal as a result of the wear.
I bought a u/s unit of this company and stripped and reconned it myself.A very clever and simple gearbox where the clutch plates by attempting to lock the shaft causes the torque generated in the gearbox to lock the gear train in forward or reverse.
So you probably should have nothing bigger than about 40 HP attached to this gearbox which at about £550 brand new isn't such a bad deal.

£550 is not such a big deal but fitting the unit on my boat takes 30hrs of back breaking work due to the way the engine is built into the boat. I did this job last year after sailing back from La Rochelle with no engine due to the failure of the original Hurth. If fitting an oil cooler as suggested by Foley Marine will save an early repetition of this work I am all for it.

Hurth and ZF gearboxes have a very small ATF oil capacity (typically 0.35 litres) and the level in the gearbox is fairly critical. I'm not sure how a cooler could be successfully fitted. I know the capacity would increase if a cooler is fitted. It's controlling the level in the box that concerns me.

The cooler used in the US is simply a water-cooled jacket bolted to the machined face on the side of the box using the holes already machined in the side of the box. It works not by cooling the oil directly as per the usual system but by taking heat from the gearbox casing. A german manufacturer used to make a cooler for the Hurth which worked on the same principal but I cant find his address and am still awaiting a reply from Foley engineers in the US.

I have a good description of the oil cooler used in the US and if I can't find one I will make one this winter using 316 stainless.

The ZF manual shows that the same kit, part no 3306-107-001 is used on ZF10 up to ZF25, which would include the ZF12.
However looking again i see that the French link is for a more elaborate cooler, kit no 3310-107-001, that does take oil out of the box unlike the first mentioned one (of which the Foley one you link to sounds like a copy).
Presumably the 3310-107-001 kit could also be applied to the ZF10 if you want to go the whole hog.

Hi Basic, Id be interested to hear how you got along building a cooler for your hurth gearbox. I'm thinking of doing the same..
