YouTube channels

lol I’ve definitely seen that one 🤣

It’s surprising how many people admit they don’t like living on board or sailing all the time when you travel about. Quite a few we’ve met have said it but the rewards are worth it.
Interesting. We much prefer full-time living aboard but we only do that bit in the tropics. I couldn't handle living aboard in the UK winter.
We are about to start another 3 or 4 years full-time liveaboard period

To be fair in that instance we were arriving at St Mary’s in the Scillies after a tedious motor and strong wind and misty rain started as we arrived so we couldn’t see the islands. There was also a huge swell so a bad intro to the Scillies. A couple we met the lady admitted she doesn’t like sailing or heeling on the boat but likes going places. I’m torn on it, I like sailing on a good day.
Agree the UK even in summer is poor for living on board. The moisture builds up just from breathing and eventually everything goes mouldy if not cleaned weekly.

Still, better than the office.

Arriving in the Scillies in poor weather can be a bit intimidating. We arrived from the North with large swell and thick fog. We anchored next to Cromwells Castle but didn't actually see it until the fog cleared, well after we were anchored. It can test your nerves

Oh we’ve watched way too many to list them all.
We just started watching Jo and Tim Jo and Tim as we’re in Scotland and they seem pretty good so far.
Their videos are quite variable - they can do quite a lot of repeating themselves. They seem quite reluctant to actually use the sails. The last few have been OK.

If you are looking for Scottish content that doesn't seem to get youtube algorithm excited then have a look at Spearax. Unfortunately not posted for a while, although I did see the boat on AIS last weekend so hopefully they are still around - just making new content.

These guys are Scottish based Tarbert Sailing small channel doing "local" stuff. By no means the worst content on youtube!

This guy mostly singlehands, he doesn't post a lot but I quite enjoy it when he does because there's less made up drama or even unnecessary chatter than many... Sailing Sula but if that's not your thing and you like a bloke on his own waffling a lot then Sailing Madness who has his boat in Scotland at the moment.

Last few suggestions for now Sailing Free Spirit - I've not watched much recently, but they had a spell in Scotland and we dip in and out occassionally. Pretty much drama free. Daughter makes the videos and wants to a wildlife videographer. More falling to sleep to stuff than edge of the seat excitement.

or if you want slightly over hyped drama with a fair dose of dodging a solution together then whilst not in Scotland, they are Scottish: Sailing Red Seas they are doing a fairly well trodden "round the world (starting in the caribeean) in a cat" route but are nursing an old ex charter boat along as things break and they eek out their funds to do it.

Sailing Florence is very good as is Sailing Sam and The Bumberling Sailor

I've also enjoyed Odd Life Crafting over the years but recently they seem to have lost their way, hope all is OK with Duca and Roberta.

Outside Your Zone is a great bunch of lads on an epic adventure around the world, well worth a watch.

Don’t watch much sailing YouTube now except for instructional vids - on which point a shout out to Bottoms Up who I discovered this week and include the only eye splice in 3 strand lesson I could make sense of - but enjoy the following when the mood takes, or in most cases on the odd occasion they get round to posting a new one:

SY Coelanth
Expédition Evans
Christian Williams
Roger Barnes
The Sailing Frenchman
Patrick Laine

I'll start with the ones I don't recommend you watch:
Expedition Evans
Uma- after they leave Svalbard.
Sailing on a shoestring

If you want to know why PM me. My partner has, very sensibly, suggested that I only post here what I would say to their faces.

Recommended:

Sailing Wood - totally done over by vendors and surveyor, like Leo, he doesn't name and shame but just gets on with it.
Complete overhaul of wooden boat, Josephine. He learns the skills on the go and seems to be a life long learner - helped by shipwrights in Gloucester. She's very quiet and paint and rows.
Not monetised.

Sailing Brothers - started from Cardiff on a UK circumnavigation but after we met them in Eastbourne, they decided to go for an Atlantic Circuit, having never left the UK! From there to a world circumnavigation.
Two ordinary lads (late thirties) - exceptionally honest about themselves and their love of cheese. Started in a Rival 34.

Sailing Brothers sounds good, will take a look.

But the Sailing Brothers catamaran is looking like a failure.....

My current interesting list:

Sailing Free Spirit - as mentioned above, nice videos and about the trip and destination, not ‘look at me’.
Jo and Tim - interesting as they sail out of the Gareloch and. We can see where we’ve been.
RAN Sailing - well made and produced story of hand making a 50’ wooden boat interspersed with life in a Swedish smallholding.
Alluring Arctic - combines sailing in winter in the arctic, along with ski touring. A bit nuts but great combination.
MJ Sailing - currently in America building a kit fiberglass cat but started watching when they were passing through the west coast. They did a really good job of local research and portrayed what we knew accurately.
Harbors Ubknown - lovely story teller with good videography, in NZ currently. Nice bikinis too. ;)
Sailing Sweet Ruca - currently in the Marshal Islands, good stories and well shot. Recently rounded Cape Horn.
SV Delos - just like seeing the aluminium cat construction.

Wow it’s interesting what other people recommend:

of all the channels I expected to see suggested here this was not one of them. It’s over sensationalised nonsense. They are clueless (as they were before they tried sailing) or at least want us to believe they are. They present themselves as the first people to ever try an adventure. They love a clickbait title/thumbnail which is how I’ve been suckered into watching so much of them. I had assumed their target audience were far younger than the YBW demographic. Their videography probably reflects their generation, they will certainly know how to maximise the monetisation.
Roger Barnes
I have a lot of time for Roger and what he’s done for dinghy cruising. I don’t have enough time in my life to watch his videos. I assume the pace is intentional, but to me they lack a “story” and each episode is twice as long as it should be.
A young couple on an old 40ft Colvic

Teulu Tribe
You’ll need to be prepared for watching a young woman whining and crying a lot if the episodes I’ve encountered are typical. These are sort of people who buy a cat (the animal) to take with them on a journey and then discover that taking an animal round the world is not as simple as taking yourself.

we've watched a few when we started out but our fave chanel by a long way is Sailing Cos I Love It

Mike puts in lots of info for new sailors and we rewatch them often and always picking up on new things as we learn more

He sails local waters here in North Wales but often goes on extended trips around the UK and Eire with his partner Lisa

I had a look at the first few, since my parents are buried in Tarbert Loch Fyne where they were centred so I know the area.

Rather a lot of Slomo Wet Spaniel though, and very little technical content so I wouldn't learn much, though vids are very inefficient for that anyway. Liked the look of the charcoal BBQ though

Don't be such an old fart. Weren't you young and clueless once?

They're a great bunch of lads, not hurting anyone and learning their way.

What's not to like, I'm left wondering if we've been watching different videos.

Good on lads there age making their way!!

I’m just old and clueless now - but I don’t feel the need to post videos making out I’m an epic adventurer for doing trips that many have done before.

They remind somehow of Clarkson, May and Hammond. But obviously much younger, and without producers to manage the risk for them.

Will be interesting to see what Lusty thinks. I haven’t watched any of them in the French canals.

That's pushing it a bit far.

They're just a bunch of decent enough lads trying to monetise one aspect of their trip.

Good on 'em I say. I always give them the thumbs up in youtube.
