Your winter plans?

Have you tried contacting Prior's boatyard (0621 782160)? They store boats in their sheds for the winter (v handy, as you are no longer weather constrained for painting), and there is usually space for empty trailers at their Chapel Rd site. Costs are fairly similar to the swinging moorings at BYH, but the ferry service is better, being available through the week rather than just weekends and BH, as at BYH.

Thanks for this suggestion. I will look into it as a possibility. I bought my dinghy from a chap who used Priors so I have been to the Chapel Road site, to pick it up. I thought it all seemed a bit cramped and that car parking might be an issue. But I had not realised that they ran a taxi service seven days a week. That would certainly cut down on the performance that I currently have to go through to get out to Jessie.

Phone Graham or Nigel at Carter & Ward at Rochford. Good winter storage, and he has plenty of secured space for trailers. Its also very cheap. 07850 384819

River Roach is a 2 hour trip for you from Burnham at 5 kts.

I was going to suggest this as well, and Jim has supplied the phone number.

Just check your tides, even with your lifting keel you won't make it at low tide with only six inches of water in the Roach and only 3 feet wide at the very top. But plenty of water at the top of any tide for you to get right onto their good smooth concrete ramp [but maybe a little muddy at the bottom]. Good electricity and water points throughout the yard. The Roach Sailing Association usually claim one of the electricity/water points to make constant cups of tea and have long conversations so that you never get any work done. You would be very welcome.

Carter and Ward could also store your trailer over summer if needs be.

Stay in till the new year, dunno where as we're being turfed off our MDL mooring mid October, they don't have space for us in their marina.

Finish off the last jobs, SSB, watermaker and wind generator, tart up flat for letting and it's off to the Caribbean in the spring.

What are you planning to do this winter ref sailing?

We stayed in last year, so only had a long weekend with Morgana out of the water to clean and polish her, plus scrape her bum clean...

So this year, we're lifting out after the new year for probably Jan and Feb so that we take our time a bit more, and do a thorough job....

What are you doing?

Truant will be staying in til about March then just a haul out, bottom antifoul, quick anode check and back in. Got a few major jobs to do this winter though, New standing rigging, new cockpit locker lids with some nice teak, a hull polish and a few other smaller bits.

But I reckon boats float for a reason :) so leave her in. I had some cracking sails last winter during Nov and Dec, so hoping for more this year.

For Kioni

As well as the Marina, have a look at the Saltings, much cheaper and a good group of people, (if I say so myself!)

Ian

Ian, thanks, I'll check it out although I've booked us in to the marina now and plan to move from our mooring at West Mersea to Tollesbury on the weekend of 17/18th Oct. We're going to try it out for the winter initially. The Saltings are fascinating, where are you and what's your boat name? We'll try and look you up next time we're there and you can tell us all about it if you like :)
