Your most memorable or evocative "boaty" song or music

I used to love this.. alas no more..:(

whether tucked up in bed on a dark winters morning
or sailing along waiting for the shipping forcast

I do agree - it's so very evocative, and stirs all sorts of memories of sailing along, the sun's just come up, waiting to hear the weather forecast. It's such a skillfully assembled medley; I suppose it was the inclusion of Rule Britannia in the medley that was causing offense at the BBC.

Moving classical :

Soave sia il vento - Cosi fan tutte: Mozart,

Pilar Lorengar (soprano)
Teresa Berganza (mezzo-soprano)
Gabriel Bacquier (bass-baritone)

"Soave sia il vento...Gentle be the breeze,
Tranquilla sia l'onda,..and calm the wave,
Ed ogni elemento...and may all elements
Benigno risponda...be favorable
Ai nostri/vostri desir....to our need."

Favorite piece when leaving port or when the **** hits the fan is 3 Little Birds (Don't worry be happy), although I played Ride of Valkyrie when we set off from Banjul towards the Caribbean!

We too tend to start any long passage with a quick blast of Valkyries as we leave port, but for some music by someone who really understands the cruising life, you can’t go past Eileen Quinn.

For some reason, SWMBO’s favourite piece is from Quinn's album “Mean Low Water”, titled “If I Killed The Captain”

...when the prop has snagged a net
it's me who's over the side
he says, "now darling, change the zinc
while you're down there for the ride"
I hold my tongue, I look for strength
from powers up above
for patience is the better part
of duty, honor, love

but if I killed the captain
really, who would know?
we're two weeks out of port
we've got one more week to go
and all that it would take
is a timely little shove (opps)
how swift the course the heart may run
to hatred from true love...

Tempted as I am to reply:

Average white boats in marinas, average white boats made of ticky-tacky,
Average white boats at the quayside and the owner in the bar,
There's a white one and a white one and a white one and a white one,
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same.
And they all have roller-reefing and self-tailing winches,
And they all put a little reef in, in anything above a two.
There's a Jeanneau and a Beneteau and a Moody and a Westerly,
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same.

my serious answer has to be "Sailing by" - forty years of listening to the Shipping Forecast...
