You are cruising along at[ insert speed of your boat here..............] when your partners [ politically correct here....hopefully ] book fall overboard.


1. do you execute a perfect MOB and arrive back to find its sunk.

2. Say you will buy her another copy, and thanks the gods that she will have to speak to you after all.

3. Say "you should have held on tight to it" and say you had warned her about the bumpy bit, [ well you muttered it under your breath] as you like to watch the effect it has on her body.[ interpret it how you like]

4. non of the above!!

let's see.... thinks, as we travel along at 25 kts.

Density of sea water at surface is 1.025 g/ml.

Density of books is from 0.945 to 1.156 g/cc, depending on the proportion of coloured illustrations, weight of paper, blah blah.

So the book may or may not sink. Now that's 28.5 seconds thinking time during which we have travelled 28.5 x 25 x 0.5144444 metres that's roughly 350 metres, so we now need to provide the initialization, movement, and search algorithms which are used by the planning system to support the search operation.

Sod it, keep on going !
 
Just carry on.....afterall you make the crew responsible for making sure all items of any value are correctly stowed or made fast - so they must replace it at their cost. They should either listen more carefully to warnings from the helm about bumpy bits or keep a better eye out!
 
Perform Williamson Turn for book knowing it is useless, but at least made the effort.

To loose headgear overboard is major bad luck.
Start expanding box search, then repeat & repeat again till found.

There is no point in going back for a book - it is going to be unusable anyway, being soaked in water.

As for a hat, I left a guest's hat in the water during the summer because we didnt want to spoil a seriously good sail. If it was my Tilley, it might be different!

This is the problem. Believe it or not, the only thing I've ever seen flying while cruising are my sunglasses, while trying to catch a US Customs Midnight Express with 4x250hp O/Bs, in San Diego bay.
I just turned back my head to look at our boat wake, but I learnt that at 80+ mph, this is a mistake.
Going back was out of question, but it was worth loosing the glasses 'cause we did take over the US Customs interceptor eventually! :D
 
Ignore the book, women don't often read decent books anyway. If it was some drivel like Mills or Boon, or the tosh by someone like Barbara Cartland it would automatically be thrown overboard, assuming it got past me in the first place.

I would then tell her to get in the galley and get the kettle on as i am dehydrating.

Or i would tell her to get in the galley and get some food on the go.

I would tell her that some cleaning needs doing, i owuld back this up with the old proverb, the devil makes much work for idle hands.
 
That scenario would not apply to us as I feel sick if I read whilst under way:mad:

However, on the occasions that the wind has blown his hat off he seems to take it as a personal affront and will go to great lengths recover it.

What is it with men and hats? All that kerfuffle and it only cost a tenner. The hat is usually recovered with great excitement , put out to dry and never worn in again as the sea water has knackered it.

We never set off with less than half a dozen hats on board as he cannot be without one so I have always failed to see what the great drama is when one goes overboard

He also lost a pair of brand new glasses overboard on the first day of a holiday - I cackled so much that he didn't speak to me for a week:D (That will teach him to place them on his shiny head:D)

Books are not read while underway, my boat is too small to ride on the surface without being buffeted about a lot making reading nigh on impossible unless a sea state of flat calm exists, and the hat over board, would have to go back as my hat has a collar clip, which would mean my jacket has gone over the side with my mobile in the waterproof pocket, my wallet, bank cards, passport,RNLI membership card,Tesco points card, and most importantly ............................................ME,inside the jacket!:D

OK, MapisM, I'll bite. Why were you chasing the customs cutter? Isn't it usually the other way round or is it just that I've led a sheltered life. :D

LOL, yeah, I've also thought to have led a sheltered life when I saw that friend of mine driving his boat like he has stolen her, even in open ocean swells... :D
No weird reasons anyway, he explained me that he does that regularly, just for fun.
Apparently also the Customs guys appreciate a bit of challenge, though their only chance to stay ahead is when sea is pretty rough, 'cause their much bigger hull obviously handles that better (39' vs. 27').
Below is a short clip of that day if you're interested, though the chase is not shown 'cause the ride was too bumpy at that speed.
