You can\'t please some people

A few years ago I set up a web site www.cornishcrabbers.org at my own expense as a way of enabling Cornish Crabber Owners to share information, as the existing owners association had ceased operating some years earlier. The site has a forum which is self updating and a "for sale" page which I update as and when someone asks me to advertise their boat . I no longer have a Crabber but I continue to operate the site .
I received this e-mail yesterday:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over a period of a year I have been looking at your web site, because I have an interested in Crabbers.

Every time I visit the site I hope for some sort of update………….
Instead I get all sort of auto links and pop ups and other shite!

If you can’t be bothered to present a proper site then why bother? ….why not Foxtrot Oscar?

How would you respond?

I wouldn't respond.......what's the point?

Re: You can\'t please some people

Ask him if, as he finds it so poor, he would like to take over the running of the site.

Deafening silence.

It must be so tempting to give the ignoramus both barrels, but Chrusty1 is right /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: You can\'t please some people

Well the site is not bad even though it's brown, but none of the links to details give any pics only insurance links as does mooring/storage.

The wanted ads go to posts from 2005.

Some for sale posts don't have a pic.

When you're in the for sale section and click 'home' you are redirected to the ugly bugs page here http://www.directnicparking.com/

Do you remember that ad in the 60/70s used to say this deodorant is in case your friends won't tell you? (that you had BO)

Well he's not a friend is he. << That is a rhetoric question

Re: You can\'t please some people

Well, the guy didn't have to be so rude but he has a point - the site could do with some new stuff on it, couldn't it?

Easiest way to give the association members something new and fresh is to set up a forum - you can have a 'For Sale' section on that so they can post their own ads. Just a thought.

Re: You can\'t please some people

I've done the same with a site for Corribee owners - initially intended as an update for the 'official' owners club site, but I ended up hosting it myself for various reasons. It is very time consuming to maintain even a small web site. Although I've had a few contributions to help with the content, much of the information has to be provided by yours truly, which means interrupting jobs to take pictures, writing up the copy afterwards, and endless emails asking for copyright permission and so on. I haven't had any of this sort of criticism (yet!!). However, it takes all sorts and you can't please them all. You can either ignore it or email a suitably cutting reply (I am currently in the smallest room with a print of your email before me. It will soon be behind me.)

I'd smother him in brotherly love. I'd write a polite reply accepting that things are not all they should be, and explain why, and that you had hoped someone would take over from you but that there had been no volunteers. Then ask if he would be interested in helping out with the site.

If he writes and apologises I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. If not...he's a plonker.

I run the Albin VEga site and I know how much work it is. I get help from Webcraft when there is a technical bit I cant sort. More of a Labour of Love than anything else. I really need to do a complete update but it does take one hell of a lot of work.... Tell him to shove his head up his a*se!!
