so, after a long trip you happen across some nice yotties in a fairly empty marina or anchorage and compare notes about the weatehr forecast. However, they can't resist asking the smiley question "how much fuel does it use each hour?" or the same question in a different style.

What's the right answer to this? Isn't it a bit rude, really? I've tried "no idea! - i get swmbo to pay!" which obv isn't correct as i just must have a very clear idea. Or "i just don't think about it!" is another. Once, an aging yotty with swmbo on a long cruise gruffed "I'd rather have my fuel bills than yours!" to which i said something along the lines of i'd rather have my boat than his piece of junk, but er obviously he went off never to be seen again....

When I first started to learn about passage planning and the logistics of fuel etc I asked my mate what did hid boat burn per hr and what was the tank capacity, so I could work out the range etc, as I was doing the plan for a trip on his boat as an exercise, his answer was

"you see Julian if you have to ask or worry about things like that you can't afford it"

Not quite the answer I was looking for!!

Expect they'll be horrified as expected whatever the answer, so i would go for maximum impact based on WOT consumption. If you can quote it in tons rather than gallons, even more impact!

I prefer to quote mpg because saying something like 'less than 1 mpg' allows a direct comparison with the questioner's own road vehicle which will probably do about 35mpg and is probably worth considerably less than the tender sitting on your bathing platform
This is also a conversation stopper at parties as any man within earshot will be thinking 'rich git, I hate him' and any woman 'rich git, why is'nt he better looking in which case I'd marry him and have his babies'.

You may well prefer your fuel bills and your boat to his but perhaps loads of people don't like your pollution? With world oil output and refining capacity becoming perilously close to demand, is your pleasure boat fuel usage justifiable and sustainable? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

good point. But face it, the oil is there and one day it will get used up. I reckon it's far better to burn it at high speed offshore that killing lots of small fluffy animals inland, hm?

Never a weekend goes by without someone asking that question of me in the yacht club.

10 gallons an hour!! Guffaw, guffaw!

Various replies - most of them self explanatory when they turn up at a pretty little anchorage off Pwllheli 3 hours after I do, and 3 hours after the sun has gone in and 3 hours after the reasonable weather window that they have missed.

And do you want a woman who only thinks your wallet is attractive?

Do the yotties really know what MPG stands for?

1: Miles per Gallon
2: Miles per Gale (but blown in the wrong direction)
3: Miles per Gust of wind

If you want the motor cruiser to sound economical

Metres per Gallon..........or even Millimetres per Gallon?

As Matt is paying for it then let him burn what the hell he wants. If he did not want to pay for it then he would presumably go for a smaller boat. It always strikes me as a touch of jealousy when someone goes stonking around at 30 knots - and can afford too!!!

Personally I dont go that fast, but am happy for other people if they wish. Anyway with the boom in the oil patch on exploration at the moment I cant see how you can say we are that short. Besides the more you burn ,the more we will look for and then maybe another pay raise.

If she could tie a bowline and a clove hitch and was'nt averse to cleaning the boat occasionally and looked like Claudia Fischer, then I might have to think about it.

OK I've thought about it. Yes

Oh Oh Oh ! Dear a Greenie and its election time, so expect lots to come pounding at the door. If you think we MB's pollute then come and stand where I work and look around for at least 50 miles, (I'm very high up), Now go away?

I think its always best to be fairly straight when people ask personal questions without reverting to becoming unpleasant and thus damning all motorboatie types in one go
try something along the lines of 'The rate of consumption is not so important to me as I measure life in terms of value not cost...'
Then revert to true Bratfud and deck 'im

No.... I want a women who can also think of some very creative (ahem) ways of encouraging me to open my wallet /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif...

As a confirmed Raggie I am happy in saying good luck to you stinkies... if you can afford it, then burn it, enjoy, and good on ya! after all, what exactly do most raggies think their plastic boats and plastic sails are made from.... ? ..... live and let live i'd say.... sermon over.
