York River Ouse Boat Deaths

That’s a little harsh
Like most on here we are not eBay sellers so don’t have your experience or understanding of sellers. Also what is the 2021 reference?

I am not a seller. Now in 2021 (and for years prior) ebay sells and distributes products from many many retailers that are also in the High street and indeed across the country and the world. These are new products. I am afraid there are still some that think for example that Amazon Just sells books and a mobile phone is Just for emergencies

I was talking about the heater and you have just demonstrated you don’t understand who sells on eBay and how it works I say again it is 2021

I can assure you that im very competent when it comes to the internet and technology in general

Its quite obvious that its just a case of crossed wires.....you were talking about heaters and i was talking about Co2 Alarms

I know enough not to buy a Co2 alarm from eBay and that was my point

:cautious:

Not sure you know that much to be honest because if you go in asking for a C02 alarm you wont get one it is a CO alarm you need....... to detect Carbon Monoxide not Carbon Dioxide. If you tried to detect Carbon Dioxide they would go of rather frequently.

Ebay will have every CO alarm that you could buy anywhere else and so would Amazon........ Get with the times

Typo / spell ck - cut the guy some slack .
I read his comments re “ e bay “ between the lines as buy a reputable brand , stuff like CE , kite , BSI or what ever .
To be absolutely sure hold it in your hand and read the package etc ……from a shop before flashing any cash .

Be a shame on here if all the smug “ I have one in each cabin “ brigade , it turns out they bought the chocolate tea pot version/ copy rip off / Sub trading stands versions …….off you know who ;) .

Imho theses days like new properties they ought to hard wire a suite of detectors in on new builds inc CO .

And an emotive subject airbrushed out @ fancy boat shows …..get this a second route out of every cabin in the event of fire ?.
So next time you are shown the owners cavernous mid cabin by the pretty lady at a show , once you have finished gasping ( no pun intended) pop this question “ where is the fire escape btw “

One of the fifty ways to die in a boat !

I don't think it's any kind of standard enforced by anyone , but my new boat did come with hard wired Co alarms in the cabin and in the separate loo.

They're actually a bit of a pain as when the service battery starts to go flat (probably if you let it Get to a lower state of charge than you should) the Co alarms start to make an intermittent beep noise to alert you to the fact that their power supply is low.

This is a bit of a pain if you're away from power for a few days and are fully aware you're going to run your service battery down. It would be better if the Co alarms had their own separate power supply.

At the end of the day this is much like a modern day issue not unlike the old gas heaters of old that every 2nd house seemed to have after people started moving away from open fireplaces. You need to take the precautions.. I've not bothered with smoke alarms (in the house) before by sheer laziness until a Fireman mate told me a few home truths. Put the right exhaust fittings on and use a Carbon Monoxide alarm or two (and obviously check the batteries of the alarms) and then the rest is up to your own decisions on how careful you want to be..

Cut corners and probably 90% of people will be ok but you really don't want to be the 10%.. We never think it will be us.

Hardwired alarms are a nice idea on paper but for private homes they're a pain in the bum and the Scottish govt's recent attempt to force the issue is stupid and more importantly unenforceable.

Nobody is talking about CO2 alarms, the issue is CO, not CO2. Do you know the difference?

Pop on to the "Which" Magazine website and find out which monitors they have tested and recommend and avoid those which they advise to avoid at all costs if you value your life ) .
Will still buy mine from ebay.
Cannot be ars** to drive over to our local DIY megastore/ local TLC and que.

Very sad.

An investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) concluded that carbon monoxide had accumulated in the main cabin from a diesel heater which Mr Holmes had bought on eBay.
Rob Loder, from the MAIB, said once lagging was removed by the investigator, the heater's exhaust was found to be leaking.
The exhaust pipe also had a silencer fitted which was not suitable for a marine setting, he said.

Heaters of any age, marine or otherwise can leak but it's worth thinking about if you love cheap eBay parts.

"Smoke and CO2 alarms are inexpensive. I fitted [q s] after an accident a few years ago. Incident involving a portable [gsnypodtable] petrol genny. Keep safe chaps"
Not hard really

Two best friends were killed by carbon monoxide from a leaking heater as they slept on a boat following a night out, an inquest has found.

Ronnie Holmes, 60, and Stephen Jewitt, 63, were found dead in December 2019 on a motor cruiser which was moored on the River Ouse in York.

The two men were discovered by a police officer after family members had raised the alarm.

The coroner's court heard there was no carbon monoxide detector on the boat.
