Take a look in this months Yachting Monthly at the pricing of new boats at the S'ton boat show .... then explain how so many boats are listed with LOA's of, say, 42 feet 12 inches!

Maybe its to do with PC's rounding of calculations from metres .... ?? Maybe actually it should be 11.x inch's and the pc removed the decimals and rounded up to 12 .....

You know how stupid these machines can be !!!!!

Oh whoops

That's down to us I suspect. We gather the data for all of the mags for the boat show previews and, as you'll see on the online versions, do so in metres.

We supply it out in whatever format is required and convert on the fly for feet and inches. Normally we write the necessary extra bits to avoid the 12in result but have obviously not done so on this occasion.

Well spotted, well guessed...now back to the drawing board.

Boat shrinkage

So they're designed to be 40'12" but they end-up measuring 40'2". Is this due to shrinkage on contact with water, like my shirts which now have too-tight collars?

I'd always noticed the opposite. Whenver a marina measures my boat which was designed to be 28'6", it comes out at 30'.

Re: Boat shrinkage

For me, the declared length of boat is proportional to the age and perceived experience of the marina hand. In Yarmouth she's always sadly 37 feet...

Certain Marina Co.

Friend of mine had a boat ........ years berthed in the marina at a rate per annum.
Then one year receives a NEW rate per annum, he's in the NEXT class and increased rates.

Asks WHY ? When you berthed sir, and we came to measure for the file and records your anchor was over the stemhead fitting and just increased your LOA into the next class.

He promptly removed anchor and requested re-measurement. Marina staff refused ............

He took his baot to another marina and NEVER leaves his anchor in the stemhead anymore !!!!!!

Re: Boat shrinkage

Boats always have three lengths. In order:

The length in the marina office

The real length

The length in the bar...

(possibly a 4th could be added as the length in the brochure...)
