YM or YW?

Having been a lurker on these message boards for a good while now, I feel it is time to start sticking my head above the parapet a little more.

The earlier thread about the late arrival of "mystique's" YM got me thinking which one is the better read - YM or YW? I used to subscribe to YW many years ago and get YM occasionally but didn't renew and now I don't get either! <<hangs head in shame>>

What are people's views/opinions on these, and what are the main differences these days?

I'm a YW person. I used to subscribe to Sailing Today but got bored with all the practical stuff and a lot of articles that repeat themselves.

I think YW offers more of an exotic flavour. I like to read about the super yachts, I like the racing articles and I also like the boat and gear tests.
I like reading articles about people who are cruising in countries that most of us will only dream about. The news features are also good as are the regular columns by Ellen and Knox Johnston.

Perhaps 50 per cent is relative to me and 50 per cent is about dreaming / escapism.

In fact I should revise those percentages cos at least 20 per cent is adverts !

Quite happy to read either to be honest but YW has the edge for me.

Going this way myself (YM & PBO) - though started out with both YM and YW. Perhaps this is a reflection on the amount of maintenance you undertake yourself?

I always get the feeling YW is for those who would like to (if you had the cash to buy the boats or take the holidays you would pay someone to read the mag for you) and YM is for those that do and have to pay their way.

Not so, I have no aspirations to own or sail the majority of boats covered in YW but am always interested in the developments on the latest racing and cruising yachts of whatever size, cruising places and the racing scene. Just because one isn't wholly part of the scene doesn't mean you can't be interested in it, how else does one "improve" beyond one's current bounds?

If we only ever read about how we really sail every magazine would be packed with peoples accounts of cruising the Solent or perhaps trips to Britanny.

There's a bigger world out there and hopefully we will all have the time and the ability to push the envelope further.

There's a thread today about people doing their first Channel crossing. I remember doing mine and then being totally humbled by a couple arriving in St Peter Port who were on their way to the Caribbean for a round the world trip.

I like to expand my horizons and if reading about the ARC or cruising the Whit Sundays inspires you then it is no bad thing.

Most people won't do it but a lot of people like looking at the pictures and wishing !

I used to subscribe to YW. Currently subscribe to YM but am a bit confused by the latest edition where someone's writing about polar bears swinging on the front of his boat. I should have thought this would be quite helpful in some of the colregs issues that come up from time to time.

There's also a dodgy article in PBO this month by the Fist Aid Pharmacist. I think there may be a conflict of interest there as he is giving some first aid advice, but also markets modular first aid kits. Again I hope he wasn't paid as it's really just advertising his product.
