Yet another underwater light thread

Hi Ace,

Nice to see the picture. Fitting lights to my targa is on my prelaunch list.
Is the middle light mounted behind the support for the bathing platform. It looks good in the water. I wondered wether the support might blot out the light. From the picture it looks like they are mounted behind the support no?

Hi Rob

I think Ace's centre light is just below the stanchion for the bathing platform support strut. I've mounted my centre light in a similar position, about halfway between the same stanchion and the big centre anode. The problem there is that when the legs are down the tie bar is pretty much in line with the light; there isn't a great deal you can do about it one way or the other - about the only solution I could see was to get the support strut modified - but that's a relatively big task to solve what I hope will be a small problem.

I did give that some serious thought but I thought it might look a little too bright ;) which is why I placed three on the rear and one on each side towards the back, gives the "all-round" effect......

I think I have some other close up shots of the fitting of the lights so will look for these tonight and post.....

I think the problem with having four is that the middle two are too close together and will look 'wrong'. I reckon three will be ok, I'm very much looking forward to seeing mine in the water next week.

The next three pic show the various positions of fitment..... Must admit this wasnt down to me but the GREAT guys in Essex boat yard but given they know there boats I trusted them .... Personally they dd a great job .. But given all the fuss about underwater lights I fully it is just an opinion, BUT it's mine ..........

Hmmm Have to confess that I went for a budget choice of these.

Not sure if anyone has experience with them. After all positive comments on here I am wondering if should have gone the whole hog an went for Lumishore colour changers. The pics do look very cool.I might surface mount the 2 I've got and see how it goes.

Out of interest which type of lumishore light did you fit.

Rona Jane has 5 x 72watt lumishores - 3 transom and 2 on the sides. But it's lumens, not watts, that matter, and each of these lights is something like 1800 fixture lumens. I know yours are quoted as "pretty much" 720 lumens but from the photos and noting they have 4 capsule LEDs they produce nothing like 720 fixture lumens I'm afraid. Probably 300 fixture lumens per unit

The pics below show 4x 120 watt lumishore, which re something like 2500 fixture lumens each. Plus 2 x 36watt lumishores on the tender. There is a huge pool of light here. There is also no trick photography or long exposure - these pics are just snapped on a normal SLR (I was there...) and you can see the little deck lights on the boat are not burnt out or over exposed

By contrast, here are the surface-mount Lumishores that I wired up this afternoon (click on the picture to see a video):



(I've hosted this on photobucket, because it's all become too much like hard work on youtube since they did their big privacy policy consolidation...)

I've got three of Lumishores's e-lite SMX-150CCP's. They are too bright to look at directly. Come on Deleted User, you know you really want colour change... :D

Obviously I'm concerned about the middle light being too deep in the water and the beam being affected by the overhanging sternthruster. I'm also concerned that drilling holes for the outer lights so close to the corners of the hull might create a stress point but maybe I'm worrying too much on that

The other alternative is to use just 2 lights like this but then the lighting effect might be a bit poor

Get one more light and make them four.
Fix them on to the 4 sides and it will be nice.
Anyways you boat looks pretty cool.

It's catching on Jimmy. I've just spend today fitting 4x colour change thru hulls to AK's boat. It's still on the hard, so photos next week maybe

Where in the boat did you decide to locate the controller?

Meantime, how the hell do you get 3M sealant 4200 off your hands? I gotta go to meetings with bankers on Monday and my hands look a riot :-)

(BTW, it took me a while to realise that picture of Vega was clickable)

OT, it was hot and sunny in Antibes today. Fantastic weather. Hurry on down

Tee-hee, well done on today's install, we had dinner w AK tonight and heard all about it! Sounds like a nice job.

Mine were put it with 5200 dontcha know, apparently the 4200 is so 5 minutes ago... :D (so Seacraft tell me!). And the controller went in at the helm in the end.

Seacraft? 5200 and 4200 are both sealants, polyurethane, but 5200 is strong adhesive and 4200 a bit weaker. My first prototype Lumishores were installed with 5200 and then we tried to remove them (EME, Gareth and I). The gelcoat came off and so we had 4 CD-sized bits of gelcoat to replace before installing the new lights. I'm firmly a fan of 4200!

And if 4200 is this hard to get off your hands (still look a mess after an hour's soak in the bath last night!) lawd knows what it's like getting 5200 off!
 
I know, I'm saying it although I often dont do it myself, but surgical gloves work nicely for such messy jobs.

Tried also some silicone coated elastic cloth gloves, v.strong and still able to feel a bit what your fingers are at, but yes, often swear a lot and even had to use the green scotch brite thingies to clean my fingers with mixed results. Not that bad, still have my fingerprints intact :rolleyes:

Hi Jmf,

I am aware that the lumishores are the best and mine will pale in comparison. That said they did seem the most powerfull for their price. I am based in relatively sandy waters in inland holland so I wanted something relatively low budget to see the effect is as up to now there is nowbody nuts enough to fit underwaterlights in this neck of the woods :).

Depending on how much fun they are I might decide to go the whole hog next year.

The unsolicited explanation from Seacraft (the people that fitted my Lumishores's to the back of the boat) was that 5200 had better long-term performance for below-waterline applications. However, they were also aware of the problem of trying to remove a fitting previously bonded in with 5200 - their solution is to apply two concentric rings of product, one around the central spigot where the trailing lead emerges, and the other around the perimeter of the fitting. This apparently enables the fitting to be non-destructively removed later, if needed. (I'm just telling you what they said....)

And +1 for Virtuvas's point about gloves - I keep a box of these on the boat, perfect for masticky jobs. About eight quid for a box from Screwfix.
