I've just purchased 3 of Lumishore's beautifully crafted and lovingly assembled underwater lights. I was advised to buy 3 because of the size of my boat but I'm having difficulty deciding where to put them. According to the manufacturer's instructions, they should be located between 4" and 12" below the waterline. This is one option

Obviously I'm concerned about the middle light being too deep in the water and the beam being affected by the overhanging sternthruster. I'm also concerned that drilling holes for the outer lights so close to the corners of the hull might create a stress point but maybe I'm worrying too much on that

The other alternative is to use just 2 lights like this but then the lighting effect might be a bit poor

What does the panel think?

Oh Heck!

It was getting a bit quiet here. I guess it'll liven up very shortly.
(Nice boat btw.)

Option two and stick the third under the sternthruster as per option one 1. With the three lights closer together than in option one you should get a good effect and no holes in the corners which personally I wouldn't want to do, but I've no factual basis for saying that..... (What size hole needs to be drilled?)

You didn't expect any agreement with the replies did you? :D

Another option.
Stick one either side of the thruster. Don't fit the third until you've assessed what the first two are like. Then buy a 4th if need be and fit in each corner.
I definately would not bother with fitting one under the thruster.

Hi Mike

Similar dilemma here - I bought three of Lumishores SM150CCP's - these are the surface mount lights, so only need a small (10.5mm) hole drilling though the transom. However, although I can get the two outboard lights nicely positioned, the centre light is forced to a lower position because of existing hardware. I ended up with this arrangement:

This was only taken a couple of days ago, and I haven't installed the controller yet - so I don't yet know if all I've succeeded in doing is nicely lighting up my outdrive tie bar...

Cheers

I should be able to contribute to this thread soon as getting my boat lifted next week to have 4 lumishores fitted. Boatyard will be sending me pictures of where they think they should go. I suggested two as far to sides as possible then other two equally spaced between. Cant wait to try out the fish attractor mode. Slightly sceptical but looking forward to fresh fish on the barbie every night!

Hi Jimmy, sorry to be nosey but what is the ball park cost of those including installation?

Forumite EME is your man for unit costs. I can't tell you the answer on the installation cost because the lights were nailed to the back of the boat by Seacraft Marine while they were doing the aircon installation, and I'm doing the controller and the wiring myself.

Cheers

Yup thats my favoured option. I'm looking more for a discrete diffused light rather than a full on mega bling laser light show so 2 might be enough anyway especially since the water in Croatia is generally v clear

Sorry in advance if this has been answered before and I missed it ... and I've never owned a mobo but hope to someday, but why does one need underwater lights?

I bought the poor man's austerity spec mono colour SM100 units which also only need a 10mm hole which I'm just wiring into the circuit for the existing useless u/w lights (just under the bathing platform lip) so my installation is dead simple. I don't know whether I'll be happy with the cheapo single colour lights so I'll be interested to see how you get on with the multi colour models

Aha. I don't imagine a 10mm hole is going to cause you a problem in the outboard location you've indicated. I thought you were installing x72's or even x120's which require a much bigger hole.

In your case I'd just buy another SM100, and have the two outboard lights as indicated, and then two inboard lights either side of the stern thruster as indicated. Job done.

PS I only wanted mono lights as well, but that EME fella is very persuasive... :D

I don't have a MOBO but a sail boat.
I have just been given a present of 3 not 'under water lights' but 'under boom lights'.
Mount to the underside of the boom to illuminate the cockpit. These are LED lights mounted into some alloy section. I'll post a picture once fitted.

I do know how to search and I did read some of the previous posts but none were really definitive with talk of seeing tunnel entrances and capsize (which I assumed were humour) and fishing and swimming (which I assumed might be real). There was also one that talked about sitting anchored at night in a pool of light, which as the poster said sounds magical.

Lots of posters think it's a good idea so I wonered why. Perhaps I'm expecting too much.

Ok, so no worry about big holes then.

Question: will two lights be powerful enough to light up any totty taking a midnight skiny dip from a nearby boat? Maybe you need an extra circuit with two additional lights for such occassions. Just tell SWMBO they're for attracting fish :D

Sorry - it's Friday in a grey London and I'm dreaming of the warm med sun and clear blue waters.....
