This time in Marigot Bay where the Canadian boat on the mooring behind the one we had occupied 24 hours earlier was broken into on Saturday evening. No attacks but ...
Marigot Bay has normally been regarded as reasonably safe and secure with supposedly an intermittent patrol. No doubt this event regarded by the government here as another "unfortunate incident". With Moorings having pulled out of Marigot last November this harbour is starting to go down the tubes and as facilities available consequently reduce and visitor numbers drop.
Sadly the safety and security net these days does not get much support or feedback (and probably none from chartered who are often the victims) so the true, complete picture is hard to detect accurately.
Soufriere moorings particularly by the bat caves continue to be the targets and aggravating hassle from boat boys has not diminished.
Ashore in Rodney Bay Area there are many uniformed security people on the streets, outside shops, in banks and so on - hardly the sign of a secure, safe area! What a message to send out.
In the anchorages however no sign of security except for a brief period after the recent, terrible murder.
People are starting to march with their feet/boats which is probably all cruisers can do - or remain within the safety and security (?) of the marina area - in which case why bother to come to the Caribbean at all.
This point of view no doubt grates with my our good friend Kellyseye but these days St Lucia has become a place to b avoided if at all possible. There are plenty of other islands fortunately with much better records of behaviour.
One may want to BELIEVE St Lucia does not have a problem ( as I have said before) but the facts indicate otherwise.
It is up to ArC management, charter organisations, and cruisers to indicate their concerns. The situation ashore that leads to crime will not change in 10s of years but protection, policing and patrlols can be stepped up significantly and immediately. The authorities seem to remain complacent.

"Go south until the butter melts then turn right" - we need another sailing direction.

"Go south until the butter melts then go straight on, then hard left when it's gone hard again?"

I heard that on the Hamble three boats were broken into during November. Does that make the Hamble a no go area ?
I think you need to get things into perspective. Things like this happen everywhere from time to time. Always have &
I guess always will.

Hi Simon, the last boat break in in Marigot Bay was on the 12/1/14, there were none there last year so it seems like a new burglar on the block. As I mentioned in St Lucia there were three 3 crimes in 2012 and 5 in 2011. I do accept that not all are reported but I suspect there are few of them given the low rate in the last few years. It still wouldn't put us off going back there.

Batteries (not) included :-)

Exactly Steve.

The outcome of that was that the cops were unable to prosecute for lack of evidence. However, when
they paid a surprise visit to his gaff they discovered a large amount of stolen gear for which he got
18 months in the pokey. :D :D some justice I suppose :D

The difference is that there is a good chance of getting topped in St Lucia!

Well I'm in the Caribbean and St Lucia is still very high up in the place to go to list - Bequia on the other hand is slipping down hill quickly with the Yanks and they see St Vincent and Grenadines as a no go area; but he Scandahooligans think its a great place!! Most places are still far, far safer than London, Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds, don't even start on how safe the USA is!

So stay away in the UK and leave us in peace in quieter and quieter anchorages........

Two murders in Manchester City centre in the last couple of weeks. One only 100 metres from our office. Didn't even make news.
Last time we were sailing in the Caribbean there was trouble in St Lucia. We simply avoided it. If every sailor avoided including the ARC the government might get the message.

As far as I know from looking at the Caribbean Safety and Security net since 2005 there has only been one murder of a cruiser in St Lucia, not a good chance of getting topped given that 600+ cruising boats pass through St Lucia every year. Another murder was in Antigua, a mega yacht skipper foolishly chased his a man who had shot his girlfriend in the leg when robbing them. A crew was murdered when anchored off Barbuda. Neither Antigua or Barbuda are on the no go list. Antigua Sailing Week attracts hundreds of yachts and many go up to Barbuda, also hundred of cruising boat pass through Barbuda and Antigua in a year.
