My recently acquired Yeoman came with a power/data cable. I have powered the unit up with this and checked it is all working fine. however it appears from reading the manual, that I need an additional power cable if I wish to send power and data to my handheld GPS. The Yeoman site is selling these at a ridiculous £44 - can anyone recommend an alternative supplier - If i could purchase the 2 pin round plug itself I would wire up the rest.

Thanks

If you've really got the power/data cable with 5(?) pins then it should be OK.
The cable should have 5 or six wires (I would have to look at mine to be sure)within it. These handle power and data.

Check the back of the manual. There's more information than the simple summary given at the front.

AFAIK the power cable is simply for people who want to use the Yeoman on it's own without connecting to GPS.
You probably don't need it; after all you've managed to power it up with what you've got!

Have you got a plug that will fit your GPS?

I have a power/data cable for the Garmin GPS and now a power/data cable for the Yeoman. Going with Rigger Mortice's lead, could I power them up seperately and just interconnect the GPS wires? And just to paint the full picture I also want output from the GPS to feed the VHF DSC so presumably a 3 way connection on the GPS data wires?

You could do it that way but it might be neater to take the GPS power from the Yeoman cable. Either way you do end up with a few wires cluttering the place up!

FWIW I would be inclined to get the Yeoman/GPS connections working first.
Worry about the DSC after that.

Yes

Single power / data lead from each back to your power panel, then make NMEA connections inside the power panel. VHF, or anything else can also connect to NMEA at that point (just wire them in parallel).

I just had a look at my Yeoman. Havent used it for a while but as I recall I just used a Choc block to connect the wires of the two units the other being a 120 Garmin. I also teed off to the DSC radio.

I have the Garmin connection details for Garmin/Yeoman if they would be of any use.

Thanks - I do have the connection detail given in the Appendix of the Yeoman user manual. I am on "pause" at present as I do not have the power/data lead for the Garmin to hand. Following the direction of this thread, I will attempt to connect all together using the two existing power/data leads and the NMEA lead into the VHF.

I'm confused as to what you're trying to do. Every Yeoman I've seen has a cable that ends in a series of bare wires - a pair for power, a pair for NMEA in, and a pair for NMEA out. Wire those up to the appropriate things, job done, no plugs involved. If you're missing a cable for your GPS, then that's nothing to do with the Yeoman side of the equation.

I was confused too. I wanted to be able to unplug my Yeoman to take off the boat so I bought a Bulgin socket and plug, wired the power and GPS feed in to the socket, the Yeoman cables into the plug. Couldn't have been easier.

I found the best thing for the yeomam, was just to drop it over the side, that was its best position. No seriously...the bin, ecofriendly and all that

I think the Yeoman is superb! I assume you of course keep your paper chart on your chart table with your course, plot lines etc up to date as you sail around? Or do you rely purely on your chartplotter? With my Yeoman I constantly update it as I go along. And know exactly where I am if by chance my gps packs up and have to go back to traditional methods.

I have said it before ....

I think the Yeoman plotter is a great bits of kit ..
and I have covered a few sea miles in my time

Belt and braces.. etc..

I believe we're talking about the plug / socket connection where said cable connects to the Yeoman. There are two sockets IIRC - one power / data, the other power only (Yeoman Sport). Replacements aren't easy to find other than through Yeoman (IME).

I assume the OP wanted to connect power to the Yeoman through one & use the other to connect directly to the GPS (data and power).

I could be wrong - it wouldn't be the first time
